According to the outlet, “When deputies arrived, the victim was in serious condition and told deputies the unknown man had come up to him and asked what religion he was. The victim answered the man and said something about being a Christian, and the man then attacked and stabbed the victim and his dog before fleeing southbound on Park Ave. S.”
Authorities said the victim was able to give a description of the suspect before being transported for medical treatment.
The suspect initially evaded deputies, prompting a search of the surrounding area.
Later, law enforcement located the suspect near the 800 block of 112th Street South.
Police said the man broke into a nearby home after being spotted. Deputies eventually confronted the suspect, who was allegedly armed with multiple knives.
A police spokesperson said the suspect approached deputies while holding the knives and resisted arrest.
Deputies then shot the suspect, citing self-defense.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity and said the investigation remains ongoing.
Officials said investigators are working to determine the full sequence of events and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Charles Porche, the acting public information officer with the Pierce County Force Investigation Team, told KOMO News that deputies are canvassing the area for witnesses.
“If there are any witnesses, they’ll talk to people that live here in the area to find out if they know anything, if they heard anything, if they saw anything,” Porche said.
The incident occurred in Parkland, an unincorporated community in Pierce County.
According to KOMO News, residents in the area have reported an increase in crime in recent months, raising concerns about safety, particularly during nighttime hours.
Some residents told the outlet they are considering leaving the area because of ongoing safety concerns.
Christopher Dotson, a father with young children, described the situation to KOMO News and said the neighborhood no longer feels safe.
“We’re looking for a route out of here,” Dotson said.
“It’s better to be somewhere safe, and kids can ride scooters and come out and do normal kid stuff without having to worry about who’s going to get shot or if you’re going to get caught in the crossfire.”
Law enforcement officials said the investigation will include a review of the deputies’ use of force, consistent with standard procedures following an officer-involved shooting.
The Pierce County Force Investigation Team is handling the case.
Officials said more information will be provided as the investigation continues.
