A Georgia woman suffered severe burns to her face and body after being doused with a toxic chemical during what authorities and family members have described as a random attack while she was walking through a public park in Savannah.
The attacker remains at large as local and federal authorities continue their investigation.
Ashley Wasielewski, 46, was walking laps around Forsyth Park on Wednesday night when the attack occurred.
According to friends and family, Wasielewski had earlier attended a Christmas program at a nearby church before heading to the park.
While she was walking, a stranger approached her from behind and poured a corrosive liquid over her head.
Those close to Wasielewski said the attack unfolded without warning.
As the liquid made contact with her skin, she began screaming as the chemical caused immediate and severe damage.

Friends said the substance burned her skin, ate through her clothing, and even melted her car’s key fob that was inside her pocket at the time of the attack.
“She was instantly like, ‘Why are you pouring water on me?’ And then her skin started to burn,” said Connor Milam, a close friend of Wasielewski.
Milam described her as a generous person who frequently volunteered in her community and helped provide essential items to homeless individuals.
Milam said the attack did not appear to be motivated by theft or robbery.
“She looked down and her pants were starting to burn off her body. She started screaming. They didn’t rob her. They didn’t take anything from her. This was a random person in the park who went out of their way to disfigure another human being,” Milam said.
Emergency responders transported Wasielewski to the Augusta Burn Center, where she is being treated for extensive injuries.
According to her son, Westley, she suffered second- and third-degree burns over approximately half of her body.
The injuries include burns to her face, scalp, hands, and legs.
Westley said he learned about the attack from a good Samaritan who stopped to help his mother in the park.
He said he was on the phone during the aftermath and could hear her screaming in pain as she waited for medical assistance.
“We don’t know who did it,” Westley said.
He also said his mother did not have any known enemies and described her as someone who got along with everyone she met.
“She doesn’t have any enemies. She is a friend to everyone,” he said.
As of Thursday, no arrests had been made in connection with the attack.
Savannah police are working alongside the FBI to determine the exact chemical used and to identify the person responsible.
Authorities have not publicly identified the substance but have described it as corrosive.
Police are reviewing surveillance footage from the area and are searching for a person of interest.
According to investigators, the individual was last seen wearing blue jeans and a dark hooded sweatshirt featuring a white cartoon rabbit.
In response to the attack, additional police patrols have been assigned to city parks as a precautionary measure.
Officials have said the increased presence is intended to reassure the public while the investigation continues.
Savannah Mayor Van Johnson addressed the incident in a Facebook post on Thursday, stating that the city’s police department was treating the case as a top priority.
“Our Police Department is treating this case with the highest urgency,” Johnson said.
He also said there was no indication at this time that the attack was part of a broader threat.
“While this attack is deeply troubling, there is currently no information indicating a broader or ongoing threat to the public,” Johnson said.
Authorities continue to ask anyone with information related to the attack to contact law enforcement as they work to identify the suspect and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
