Rapper Nelly is speaking out following backlash over his performance at President Donald Trump’s Liberty Ball in January, as reported by The Daily Mail.
In a recent interview and a follow-up social media post, the Grammy-winning artist clarified that his appearance was about respecting the office of the presidency—not a political endorsement—and criticized what he described as double standards surrounding public figures, including Vice President Kamala Harris.

During a conversation on Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning, Nelly addressed claims that he was “pro-Trump,” saying, “See, this is what I’m saying. Where did you get pro-Donald? What you had was ‘respect for office.’”

He continued, “People spin narratives to things that fit whatever they’re against instead of giving a brother the exact fundamental of what he did, what he said. Nobody’s doing that anymore.”
Amid renewed discussion about his inauguration appearance, Nelly also posted a lengthy response in the comments of The Shade Room, where he sharply criticized Harris for her record as a prosecutor and her personal life.
Referring to her marriage to Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, Nelly wrote that people were attacking Black men like him and Snoop Dogg, who are married to Black women and actively support their communities, while excusing Harris, “the prosecutor who has probably locked up more Black men than we’ve helped… with the white husband and white kids.”

Nelly defended his and Snoop’s long-term work in underserved communities, including scholarships to historically Black colleges, youth sports programs, and mentorship in high-crime neighborhoods.

“I’ll put whatever up me and Snoop do more in the community and have been doing for over 20+ years against any of you that are just on here talking trash,” he wrote.
When asked by Officer Lew during an interview on X about performing for Trump, Nelly said, “I’m not doing this for money. I’m doing this ‘cause it’s an honor. I respect the office.” He compared the duty to that of U.S. service members who serve regardless of who holds office.
He also addressed claims of racism against Trump, referencing the 1994 Crime Bill and the 1970 DOJ lawsuit against Trump Management. “Nobody’s allowed to change?” Nelly asked.
“I’m not telling you who to vote for,” he added. “But what I’m saying is that he’s the president of the United States. He’s not the candidate… He won.”
