A Boston Red Sox fan made an unconventional catch during Thursday’s home game at Fenway Park, using his food instead of a glove to snag a foul ball hit into the stands.

The incident took place in the top of the fifth inning as Toronto Blue Jays infielder Bo Bichette fouled off a pitch thrown by Red Sox right-hander Walker Buehler.

The ball veered into the stands behind home plate and landed in the hands of a fan—who happened to be holding food at the time instead of a glove.

While it’s not uncommon for fans seated near the field to bring gloves to snag foul balls, this particular fan managed the catch without any traditional equipment.

Instead, he caught the ball mid-snack, drawing laughter and cheers from nearby spectators and a mention on the game broadcast.

The spontaneous moment brought a dose of humor for fans at Fenway, who have recently had little to celebrate.

Prior to Thursday’s contest, the Blue Jays had won the first three games of the series in Boston, putting the Red Sox on a losing skid.

However, the home team managed to turn things around in the series finale, defeating Toronto 4-3.

Thursday’s win gave Boston a 7-7 record to start the season.

The victory stopped a three-game slide and provided a morale boost as the club now looks ahead to a favorable matchup against the Chicago White Sox over the weekend.

The three-game series begins Friday at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago.

Despite early inconsistencies, the Red Sox have the opportunity to climb above the .500 mark as they take on a struggling White Sox.

Chicago entered the weekend with one of the worst records in Major League Baseball, giving Boston a strong chance to build momentum.

Walker Buehler, recently added to the Red Sox starting rotation, pitched into the fifth inning during Thursday’s win.

The Red Sox bullpen held on to preserve the one-run lead, and the team avoided a four-game sweep at the hands of their division rivals.

As for the fan with the food-catch, his quick reflexes and improvisation gave the crowd a moment of levity and capped off a day at the ballpark that ended on a high note for Red Sox supporters.

The Red Sox will aim to carry that energy into their weekend series in Chicago as they look to build consistency in the early stretch of the 2024 season.
