Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) drew renewed attention on Tuesday following an impromptu exchange on a Washington, D.C. sidewalk when an individual approached him with a question about the Republican tax reform bill introduced in the House this week.

The moment quickly gained traction online after Burchett responded with a sarcastic remark that has since gone viral.

The interaction occurred the day after House Republicans, led by Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (R-MO), unveiled a sweeping tax reform proposal titled The One, Big, Beautiful Bill.

The legislation includes a number of measures aligned with President Donald Trump’s economic agenda and mirrors key provisions from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

Among the proposed changes are adjustments to individual and corporate tax rates, incentives aimed at boosting domestic investment, and expanded deductions for small businesses.

In addition to the tax code revisions, the legislation also includes Medicaid-related reforms, which have become a point of contention among critics and supporters alike.

The bill’s Medicaid provisions include expanded work requirements for able-bodied adult beneficiaries and additional safeguards aimed at preventing unauthorized access to the program by individuals residing in the country illegally.

On Tuesday afternoon, as Burchett walked near the Capitol, he was approached by an individual who questioned the bill’s impact on Medicaid.

The question appeared to suggest that the legislation included broad funding cuts to the program.

“Congressman, how can you assure the American people that Medicaid won’t be cut?” the man asked.

Burchett replied, “How can you assure your nana that you still support her after she told you that chocolate milk comes from brown cows?”

The moment was recorded and shared online, drawing responses from viewers who described the comment as a pointed but humorous pushback to what some perceived as a loaded question.

Rep. Burchett, who represents Tennessee’s 2nd Congressional District, has become known for his unscripted moments and direct style in media appearances and public interactions.

He has also been a consistent supporter of legislation aligned with President Trump’s policy goals.

The broader legislative effort, spearheaded by Chairman Smith, is expected to face opposition from Democrats but has received backing from GOP leadership and the Trump Administration.

Supporters of the bill argue it will provide relief for working families and small businesses, increase employment incentives, and enhance oversight of federal benefits.

Critics, however, have raised concerns about the Medicaid provisions, arguing that stricter work requirements could lead to disruptions in coverage.

Republican lawmakers who support the changes contend that the measures are designed to promote workforce participation and ensure resources are directed to those who meet eligibility guidelines.

As debate over the bill continues in congressional committees, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are expected to offer amendments and additional proposals.

Hearings and markup sessions are likely to follow in the coming weeks.

The House Ways and Means Committee has not announced a formal vote date for the legislation.

President Trump has expressed support for the bill, calling it a “bold step forward” in restoring economic policy centered on American workers and taxpayers.
