Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., called on Americans to record Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers during operations and sharply criticized federal officials over the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Macklin Good, arguing that conclusions were drawn before the investigation was complete, as reported by The New York Post.
Speaking Sunday on CBS News’ Face the Nation, Omar said public filming of ICE activity is necessary to ensure accountability.
“It is really important for Americans to record, to create the level of accountability and transparency that we need,” Omar said during the interview.
Omar, whose 5th Congressional District includes Minneapolis, said she has concerns about how ICE agents conduct operations in the city.
“What we’ve seen in Minneapolis is ICE agents oftentimes jumping out of their cars, these are unmarked cars, oftentimes they’re wearing a mask, they’re approaching, running towards cars,” she said.
The comments come after the shooting death of Renee Nicole Macklin Good, who was killed when an ICE officer opened fire after she accelerated her SUV in the direction of federal agents during an enforcement action.
ICE officer Jonathan Ross fired the shots that killed Good. According to officials, Ross recorded the encounter on his cellphone, and the footage has since been released publicly.

Ross was not wearing a body camera at the time of the incident. Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons said on Fox News’ The Sunday Briefing that the agency is “still in the process of deploying” body cameras.
Omar accused the Department of Homeland Security of repeatedly providing inaccurate information about high-profile ICE operations.
She also disputed federal accounts of the Good shooting, saying video evidence contradicts statements made by administration officials.
“Renee Nicole Macklin Good as you hear her say, she’s not mad, she’s sitting in her car, peacefully waving cars to get by,” Omar said. “You see the other officer, who can clearly see the car is moving, move towards the front of the car.”
“If they are saying that he has 10 years on service and is trained, he should know that you shouldn’t be trying to get in front of a moving car,” she added.
Video from the incident shows Ross standing in front of Good’s SUV while it was stopped, before she began accelerating toward him.
At that point, Ross fired three shots, killing Good. According to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Ross was taken to a nearby hospital after he was “hit by the vehicle” and was later released.
Omar also criticized senior officials in President Donald Trump’s administration for commenting publicly on the shooting before investigators concluded their review.
“We can see in the videos that have been produced so far that what they are describing is really not what had taken place,” Omar said. “This level of rhetoric is not justifiable to the American people.”
The Minnesota congresswoman has clashed with federal immigration officials before. Last year, she claimed ICE agents questioned her son, an allegation the Department of Homeland Security denied.
The Trump administration has increased ICE activity in Minnesota following revelations tied to a large-scale welfare fraud scandal in the state. Omar criticized that response, arguing it has created unnecessary disruption.
“What they are doing is creating confusion, chaos, trying to intimidate people from being able to exercise their regular, normal activities,” she said.
“There are ways to investigate fraud, which we have been doing in Minnesota, which the federal government has been doing under the Biden administration,” Omar added. “There is no reason for them to use this level of rhetoric.”

Federal officials have said the Minneapolis shooting remains under investigation and that officers acted in response to a perceived threat during the encounter.
