Democratic California State Sen. Scott Wiener — who previously authored a bill to reduce certain sex offender registry requirements — is running against Democratic California Rep. Nancy Pelosi, according to a Thursday report.
Sources close to Wiener told the San Francisco Standard the state representative is done waiting for the 85-year-old Pelosi to retire, and he will likely release an official announcement regarding his campaign next week.
Pelosi has served 20 terms as a representative for the San Francisco area and has twice served as speaker of the House. (RELATED: ‘Just Want To Be Left Alone’: Farmers Fed Up With Newsom’s Latest Gambit)
The Standard said Wiener’s campaign declined to comment, but reported that a Wednesday text message from Wiener said, “I’ve been preparing and raising money for whenever the race starts.”
Since becoming a state senator in 2016, Wiener has served as one of the most left-wing politicians in the country.

Wiener authored a bill that relaxed requirements for sex offenders who were no more than 10-years-older than their minor victims, and Newsom signed that bill in 2020. Wiener introduced the bill in January 2019 to stop “discrimination against LGBTQ young people on the sex offender registry.”
In 2021, Wiener said he was “really proud” of a law placing biological males in women’s prisons and criminalized feminists who opposed the legislation.
Wiener also introduced a 2022 bill allowing children 12 and older to get vaccinated without their parent’s consent.
In 2023, he called the California Family Council, a Christian advocacy organization, a “hate group” after its outreach coordinator stated that men cannot have a menstrual cycle.
Wiener has also advanced bills changing parental rights in the state.
The legislation included requiring training for teachers to “identify” and support students identifying as LGBTQ, creating guidelines for judges to decide custody decisions based on which parent “affirms” the child’s “gender identity” and allowing children 12-years-old and up to be placed in state residential housing without parental consent.
After Charlie Kirk’s assassination, Wiener referred to Kirk as a “vile bigot” in a X post.
He also authored legislation that would prohibit most law enforcement officers from wearing masks when working with the public.
The Daily Caller reached out to Wiener’s office but did not hear back as of publication.
