Verona Police Department (VPD) officers reportedly caught and charged a Pennsylvania man with targeting Trump supporters with flyers likening the Republican nominee to Nazi Germany throughout August and September.
Philip Heffler, a 71-year-old man, threw flyers that read “Nazi’s 4 Trump” and “Make America 1930s Germany again,” police said, CBS News reported. The flyers tossed into Verona and Penn Hills yards allegedly also contained swastikas.
“It’s ridiculous to compare the two. I think it’s a slap in the face to Jewish people to compare Trump to Hitler,” Tracy Smith, a resident, told the outlet.
Smith said she found flyers in her Church Street yard in September, according to CBS. Her security cameras captured video of the 71-year-old allegedly lobbing the flyers from his vehicle at her residence, then driving away.
At least two additional Verona residences with pro-Trump signage fell victim to the flyers, police said.
“I’m not really afraid of him, no, but I’m also protected too,” Smith told the outlet.
Officers said they were unable to identify Heffler as the suspect with video evidence alone.
A Penn Hills woman told police that she received a flyer inside a Giant Eagles fried chicken bag, according to the outlet. Investigators examined the Verona Giant Eagle’s security video and identified Heffler as the suspect after watching him use his Advantage Card at the store and allegedly tying him to the other videos. Heffler reportedly admitted to throwing the flyers when questioned by officers, police said. He also allegedly began a “tirade” about Trump. Heffler did not believe he would be apprehended and apologized, according to investigators.
“I think if he’s trying to change anybody’s mind, maybe having a conversation would work instead of writing these papers and throwing them into people’s yards,” Smith told CBS News.
Democrats on major left-leaning news outlets have compared Trump to Hitler and the Nazis. Democratic strategist Aisha Mills alleged Monday on CNN that Trump has shown admiration for Nazis and Adolf Hitler. Meanwhile, George Conway took to MSNBC on Oct. 5 and compared Trump to Hitler.
Trump, who has faced two assassination attempts in recent months, previously accused Democratic politicians, staffers and party members of escalating rhetoric against by releasing a list the day after he was allegedly targeted by Ryan Routh.
