Riot Declared at Portland ICE Facility

There was a big turnout Saturday for the “No Kings” rally in Portland. The city’s mayor would later claim there were as many as 50,000 people who turned out.

That rally started winding down in the late afternoon and that’s when a large group of Antifa types broke off and marched toward an ICE facility.

Rioters in black clothing launched fireworks and created a makeshift battering ram — breaking a glass door and breaching the facility, Oregon Live reported.

Around 6:30 p.m., cops declared the gathering near the ICE building an unlawful assembly and warned protesters to disperse.

Federal officers in tactical gear deployed smoke, tear gas, flash grenades, and other projectiles as some in the crowd hurled fireworks and water bottles in response, the outlet said.

At about 8 p.m., the feds reported that criminal activity has escalated to assault and criminal mischief, authorities said. Local cops announced they would begin making arrests and warned the unruly crowd not to interfere.

Some video from the scene.

There were some pretty serious scuffles at one point.

Over time the crowd outside diminished from several hundred to about a hundred. Police said it was no longer a riot after about 9pm but continued to deal with the same group and made more arrests into the night.

Throughout the night, PPB reported observing “criminal behavior,” leading to targeted arrests. Officers on bikes conducted visibility patrols to deter crime but PPB said they sometimes disengaged when their presence escalated tensions. A second arrest occurred around 10:50 p.m. after a person was seen throwing a rock at the building. Officers reported being pepper sprayed during the arrest, but no suspect was located, and no additional injuries were reported.

At 1 a.m., a third suspect was arrested on Southwest Macadam Boulevard for allegedly picking up traffic control devices and placing them in his truck.

Three arrests were made in all. These weren’t the first arrests at the site. Activists have been showing up at this ICE facility all week.

Small numbers of protesters have been gathering outside Portland’s ICE facility all week after large-scale protests erupted in Los Angeles in response to federal immigration raids, prompting President Donald Trump to deploy the National Guard and U.S. Marines to the city.

On Wednesday, Portland police arrested two people accused of arson and another person accused of choking a police officer during a protest in front of the ICE building.

On Thursday night, Portland police arrested 10 more people at a protest there.

Things calmed down by Sunday and it was just a few dozen Antifa types who returned to the site for more. Here’s a local news report on the riot and the return of Antifa the next day.
