President Donald Trump responded Saturday to the death of former FBI director and special counsel Robert Mueller with a statement posted on social media shortly after the news was announced.

“Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people! President DONALD J. TRUMP,” Trump wrote.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

Mueller, a longtime federal law enforcement figure, died at the age of 81, according to a statement released by his family on Saturday.

The announcement confirmed his passing and requested privacy.

“With deep sadness, we are sharing the news that Bob passed away last night.

His family asks that their privacy be respected,” Mueller’s family said in a statement shared to social media.

Mueller was born in New York and spent decades in public service, including serving as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation before later being appointed special counsel.

His role as special counsel placed him at the center of a high-profile investigation into the 2016 election, which extended through much of Trump’s first term in office.

The investigation examined allegations related to Russian interference in the election.

Mueller’s report concluded that Russia interfered primarily through social media activity with the intent of benefitting Trump’s campaign.

Despite the scope of the investigation, no charges were brought against President Trump.

Mueller did not formally exonerate Trump in his findings, leaving aspects of the report subject to continued public and political debate at the time.

The special counsel investigation remained a dominant issue during Trump’s presidency, drawing attention from lawmakers, the media, and federal officials.

It involved extensive document reviews, witness interviews, and coordination with multiple federal agencies.

Mueller’s appointment as special counsel followed his tenure leading the FBI, where he had served for more than a decade.

His law enforcement career included roles as a federal prosecutor and senior Justice Department official before his leadership of the bureau.

Following his time as special counsel, Mueller maintained a relatively low public profile.

In recent years, it was reported that he had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

His family confirmed the illness but did not announce an official cause of death at the time of his passing.

Trump’s response marked one of the first public reactions from a national political figure following Mueller’s death.

The two men had a contentious history tied to the investigation, which had long been a focal point of political discussion in Washington.

Mueller’s death comes years after the conclusion of the special counsel probe that shaped a significant portion of national political discourse during the late 2010s.

His work, along with the reaction to it, remained a defining element of that period.

Further details regarding memorial services or arrangements have not been publicly released.
