Podcast host Joe Rogan has taken aim at the widespread practice of adding fluoride to public drinking water, calling it an “insane” approach to preventing tooth decay.
During a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan questioned the logic behind fluoridation, arguing that sugar and candy are the real culprits behind dental issues—not a chemical known to have neurotoxic properties.
“Candy and sugar is really what caused all this horrible tooth decay in people, and the goofy f**king solution that someone came up with along the way was putting fluoride in the water, which is so god damned insane that you’re taking a neurotoxin and you’re putting it in the water,” Rogan said.

Rogan emphasized that his concerns about fluoride are not rooted in politics but in common sense.
He criticized those who defend the practice simply because it has been endorsed by “experts” over time.
“There is something that people do where even if something is obviously stupid, if it’s a part of a system and there’s enough air quotes experts that have endorsed this—regardless of the fact we’ve seen time and time again throughout history that experts are compromised… People argue on the side of the experts, and I’ve seen this about fluoride, and it’s so mind boggling.”
Rogan pointed to studies that have suggested a correlation between high fluoride levels in drinking water and lower IQs, calling it undeniable evidence of its potential harm.
“There are conclusive studies that show a direct correlation between high levels of fluoride in the local water and lower IQs, and it’s a neurotoxin. We know it’s bad for you in large doses,” he said.
Despite these concerns, Rogan noted that many people continue to support fluoridation, even getting defensive when its dangers are brought up.
“There are f**king people out there with college degrees who read The New York Times who think they’re sensible people that will get angry if you want to remove this neurotoxin from water,” he said.
Rogan also pointed out the contradiction in how fluoride is marketed in toothpaste.
While major brands have long promoted fluoride as an essential ingredient for cavity prevention, there are now fluoride-free toothpaste options on store shelves.
“My friend Eddie Bravo had a great point. He said, ‘When you get toothpaste, do you ever see toothpaste? It says fluoride free. Why would they say that and advertise it—Tom’s? If fluoride wasn’t bad for you, why would they do that?’”
Rogan explained that for years, consumers were trained to look for fluoride in their toothpaste, assuming it was necessary for dental health.
Now, brands are promoting alternatives, raising questions about whether fluoride is truly as safe as it has been made out to be.
Rejecting the idea that fluoride is necessary for good oral hygiene, Rogan boiled it down to the basics.
“No, just brush your f**king teeth. It’s really that simple,” he said.
