Republicans have allowed Democrats to take a victory lap on President Donald Trump’s first days in office.

It seems like a broken record to say that Republicans are great at writing statements and even better at doing nothing, but that perfectly sums up their work over the last 100 days as the majority party.

While Trump has signed the most executive orders in the first 100 days since President Franklin D. Roosevelt, he also holds another record. Republicans have sent him just five bills to sign into law at the same time. For comparison, former President Barack Obama signed 14 in his first 100 days, and former President Joe Biden signed 11. It is also important to note that Trump had signed 30 bills into law at the start of his first administration, making his five-bill tally look even worse for Republicans.

Biden’s first 100 days:
$1.9T rescue plan passed
200M COVID shots given
Child poverty slashed
Rejoined Paris Climate Accord
Expanded healthcare
Restored pandemic response
Global climate leadership
Protected Dreamers
Reopened ACA enrollment

But don’t worry, everyone, because Speaker of the House Mike Johnson released a strongly  worded statement promising that House Republicans are working “around the clock.” (Sign up for Mary Rooke’s weekly newsletter here!)

“We’ve been working around the clock to codify so much of what President Trump has been doing. I think there’s 143 executive orders that have been issued thus far, and we’re working around the clock to make sure that we put these into statutory law so that it can’t be reversed and erased by an upcoming administration. For some reason, the media acts like this effort is somehow a negative thing. It’s not at all,” Johnson said.

The American people don’t really care about what the media thinks about their work codifying Trump’s executive orders and proclamations. What we care about is what Republicans, who hold the majority in both Congressional chambers, are actually doing to get the work done.

“We plan to work together to enshrine the agenda in the law and make sure we have a roaring American economy and stability and security, prosperity, and strength again,” Johnson added.

Republicans must think this is 1998, when their voters would eat whatever slop they threw down on a plate. Too much has happened in the past 20 years. Americans have been through several inflation cycles, recessions, and societal breakdowns for us to accept a statement and move on. We want action. (ROOKE: We Don’t Want Government Handouts — Just Stop Taxing Us To Death)

In November, voters showed Trump overwhelming support. We gave him a trifecta of federal government control to codify our agenda to bring back the American Dream, protect our borders, and end government waste. What did Republicans do with this power? Nothing.

No fundamental reforms have taken place. Congress has done nothing of substance to secure our national security or financial future. However, they do promise there’s a plan to do that.

Americans don’t want to hear there’s a plan to “enshrine the agenda,” they want to see actionable steps taken. Give us bills, rewrite existing laws, slash regulations — show us you actually want to follow through on your promise to represent us.

A common saying in politics is that being the opposition party is always easier. So maybe Republicans are hoping American voters will take their power and give it to Democrats in the midterms. If this is the case, they are currently committing the most obvious dereliction of duty, and their campaigns were arguably the biggest con job ever enacted on the voters.

When Trump came into office, Americans hoped our country would turn a corner and once again become the beacon on the hill for other countries to envy. But the longer it takes for Republicans to do the work we sent them to Washington to do, the angrier and depressed we become.

Republicans ran on giving us our country back. It’s high time they deliver on their promise.
