The left is once again going after their favorite Supreme Court punching bag, Justice Clarence Thomas.
Since his confirmation hearing, Thomas has endured constant attacks from Democrats, including the frequent demands he recuse himself from cases and even resign from the bench simply because he’s a conservative. However, the left isn’t angry this time about his judicial opinion. Instead, they are upset over … *squinting to make sure I’m reading this right* … him doing the job Supreme Court justices have done for decades: swear cabinet members into office.
Yesterday, VP Vance was out of town so Justice Clarence Thomas performed Sean’s official swearing. He spent so much time with our family in his chamber, telling our kids about his childhood & the series of miracles in his life that led to becoming a Supreme Court judge. CNN host Dana Bash is apparently annoyed that President Donald Trump asked Thomas to swear in several of his nominees, including Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Attorney General Pam Bondi. (Sign up for Mary Rooke’s weekly newsletter here!)
“Please raise your right hand again and again and again,” Bash said. “That’s what we heard from Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, who’s emerging as the go-to justice to swear in Donald Trump’s cabinet, overseeing ceremonies at the Supreme Court, at the White House, even at his own home, all while he and his wife, a longtime conservative activist, are drawing exceptional attention from President Trump.”
“Not that there’s anything untoward about doing it. It’s just what it symbolizes,” she continued. “I don’t have a very strong memory of cabinet officials having swearing-ins of any Supreme Court Justice.”
Well, Dana, let me refresh your memory because not only is Thomas’ role pretty standard for Supreme Court justices, but several liberal justices have also participated in the process for Democrat nominees.
- William Barr (Attorney General) – Sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts in 2019
- Loretta Lynch (Attorney General) — Sworn in by Justice Sonia Sotomayor in 2015
- Eric Holder (Attorney General) — Sworn in by D.C. Superior Court Judge Robert Richter in 2009. While not the Supreme Court, the D.C. Superior Court is the highest court in the District of Columbia.
- Hillary Clinton (Secretary of State) — Sworn in by D.C. Court of Appeals Associate Judge Kathryn Oberly in 2009. While also not a Supreme Court justice, the D.C. Court of Appeals is often considered the second highest court in the country.
- Condoleeza Rice (Secretary of State) – Sworn in by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in 2005
- John Ashcroft (Attorney General) – Sworn in by Justice Clarence Thomas in 2001
- Alberto Gonzales (Attorney General) – Sworn in by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor in 2005
- Edwin Meese III (Attorney General) – Sworn in by Chief Justice Warren Burger in 1985
- Janet Reno (Attorney General) – Sworn in by Justice Byron White in 1993.
- Elizabeth Dole (Secretary of Transportation) – Sworn in by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor in 1983
- William French Smith (Attorney General) – Sworn in by Chief Justice Warren Burger in 1981
This list doesn’t even include January 23, 1977, when Chief Justice Warren Burger swore in thirteen of former President Jimmy Carter’s cabinet nominees.

Still, Bash has a point. Typically, the cabinet members are sworn in by the vice president. But, perhaps she hasn’t noticed that, unlike former Vice President Kamala Harris, who was mostly absent during the Biden administration. Trump’s vice president, J.D. Vance, has been working. Vance has traveled to North Carolina to be with the victims of Hurricane Helene, and he’s currently in France talking about the future of AI. The reality is that the left keeps losing, and they have no idea how to handle the mountain of defeat staring them in the face. They lost to Trump in November. They are losing control of the narrative. And apparently, they are losing their ability to create a formidable attack on their opponents if all they have against Thomas is that Trump has asked him to do his job.
