Axios reporter Alex Thompson openly criticized the media for its handling of Joe Biden’s mental decline during his speech at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday.
Thompson made the remarks while accepting the “Overall Excellence in White House Coverage” award.
“Being truth tellers also means telling the truth about ourselves. We, myself included, missed a lot of this story,” Thompson told the room full of journalists.

“President Biden’s decline and its cover-up by the people around him is a reminder that every White House, regardless of party, is capable of deception.”
Thompson acknowledged that the media’s failure to accurately report on Biden’s condition contributed to declining public trust.
“Some people trust us less because of it,” he said. “We bear some responsibility for faith in the media being at such lows. I say this because acknowledging errors builds trust, and being defensive about them further erodes it.”
“We should have done better,” Thompson concluded.
YIKES! Axios’ Alex Thompson SCORCHES the media at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner for covering up Biden’s lack of mental acuity.
The room was silent!

While Thompson admitted the media’s shortcomings, he and CNN anchor Jake Tapper are now preparing to release a book about Biden’s decline, prompting criticism that they are attempting to profit from a story they initially downplayed.

Thompson had reported on some of Biden’s physical limitations prior to the presidential debate that brought wider attention to concerns over Biden’s cognitive abilities.
However, much of the media, including Thompson’s Axios colleagues, previously dismissed concerns about Biden’s mental fitness.
Jake Tapper, in particular, publicly defended Biden.
During a past CNN segment, Tapper pushed back on Lara Trump when she raised concerns about Biden’s cognitive condition, suggesting she was mocking Biden’s stutter rather than acknowledging broader mental fitness issues.
Seems like a good time to remind everyone that in 2020 Jake Tapper, first, accused me of making fun of people with a stutter (an atrocious accusation) and then attempted to shut me down and ended our interview when I tried to warn people of Joe Biden’s very obvious cognitive… pic.twitter.com/ZOxSGQP13J

Axios also published an article months before the debate quoting Biden allies, including Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, defending Biden’s mental agility.
The report sought to counter Special Counsel Robert Hur’s findings, which had described Biden as an “elderly man with a poor memory.”
The Axios article highlighted comments from Biden’s allies dismissing Hur’s report as “BS” and praised Biden’s sharpness in meetings.
Voter concerns over Biden’s fitness, reflected in public polling, were only briefly mentioned at the end of the article.
A Gallup poll from October showed that just 31% of Americans reported having significant trust in the media’s ability to report news accurately.
The low level of trust reflects long-standing frustrations with perceived media bias and selective coverage.
Thompson’s admission at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner comes amid growing skepticism toward legacy media outlets, many of which had minimized or dismissed reports about Biden’s declining condition during his presidency.
