A crew member aboard Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas died Thursday evening after going overboard while the ship was sailing through the waters near the Bahamas, according to company officials, as reported by The New York Post.

The incident occurred around 7:00 p.m. as the vessel was nearing the final leg of its 7-day Caribbean voyage. Royal Caribbean has confirmed the death but has not publicly identified the deceased.

Video footage circulated on social media showing what appeared to be a recovery effort in progress. According to Cruise Hive, rescue crews retrieved the crew member’s body from the water approximately 30 minutes after the individual went overboard.

“Our crew immediately initiated a search and rescue operation, but unfortunately, the crew member passed away,” a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in a statement.

“We extend our condolences to the crew member’s family and loved ones. To respect their privacy, we have no additional details to share.”

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. Officials have not confirmed whether the individual fell or jumped from the ship. No foul play has been reported at this time, and Royal Caribbean has not disclosed any further findings.

At the time of the incident, the Icon of the Seas was completing a scheduled seven-day itinerary through the Caribbean. The ship is expected to return to port in Miami, Florida, on Saturday as originally planned.

The Icon of the Seas is the latest and largest vessel in Royal Caribbean’s fleet. Launched in 2024, it has quickly become one of the company’s flagship cruise liners, attracting thousands of passengers on voyages through the Caribbean.

At Cruise Terminal 1, Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas held a simulated cruise on Tuesday, July 27, with several hundred employees and volunteer passengers who have been COVID vaccinated and will also be tested before boarding.

Royal Caribbean has not issued a public timeline for any internal review or investigation related to the incident.

Cruise industry safety protocols require immediate notification to relevant maritime authorities in such cases, and further details may be released pending any official inquiries.

The cruise line has not indicated whether onboard operations or future itineraries will be affected as a result of the death.
