Amazon announced Monday a $20 billion investment in rural Pennsylvania, marking the largest private-sector investment in the state’s history.
The move aims to expand the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and cloud computing operations, while creating more than 1,200 high-skilled jobs and supporting thousands more across related industries.
The company confirmed that two locations—Salem Township in Luzerne County and Falls Township in Bucks County—will serve as the first campuses for its new data center development. Additional sites across the state are under consideration.

According to Amazon’s announcement, the investment will directly create 1,250 jobs while indirectly supporting thousands of others across the data center supply chain.
The company also noted that since 2010, it has invested $26 billion in Pennsylvania, contributing over $26 billion to the state’s gross domestic product. These investments have supported 27,000 direct jobs and 37,100 indirect jobs.

Amazon stated that the new data center facilities will be accompanied by education and workforce development programs aimed at building local talent pipelines.
Initiatives will include data center technician training, fiber optic fusion splicing workshops, and STEM-related programming for K-12 students.
Additionally, Amazon is launching the Amazon Northeastern Pennsylvania Community Fund with an initial $250,000 commitment.
The fund will award grants of up to $10,000 to support STEM education, digital skills training, environmental initiatives, local culture and heritage, and community health programs.
Amazon’s Vice President of Public Policy, Shannon Kellogg, highlighted the role of the Trump administration in facilitating the project.
Speaking with FOX Business, Kellogg praised federal efforts to streamline infrastructure development and permitting processes related to large-scale data center construction.
“We work very closely with the Trump administration in terms of understanding the types of things that they’re trying to do to spur continued data center investment across the U.S.,” Kellogg said.
“They have a number of policies that they have been advancing to make it easier to develop data center infrastructure here in the U.S., including what can be done to make permitting more streamlined and faster.”
Kellogg added that access to power remains a core concern. “Power is central to all this,” she said.
“You have to have the energy in order to enable this type of continued build-out of infrastructure in the U.S., and so the administration is really focused on what can be done to expand the generation and transmission of power across the country.”
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro welcomed the announcement and confirmed his administration’s involvement in bringing the deal to the state.
“This initial investment from Amazon will create thousands of good-paying, stable jobs as Pennsylvania workers build, maintain, and operate the first two data center campuses in Luzerne County and Bucks County,” Shapiro said.
“Our team worked closely with local leaders and Amazon to land this deal, and we continue to be actively engaged on securing additional sites in Pennsylvania—helping them secure local support, developing the infrastructure needed to support more data centers, and ensuring our permitting processes move quickly and efficiently,” Shapiro added.
The investment marks a significant expansion of Amazon’s footprint in Pennsylvania and comes as states across the country compete to attract data center development tied to the rapid growth of AI and cloud computing.
