San Francisco: Trans Activist Charged with Threatening an ICE Officer, Destruction of Property

More than a month ago I wrote about attempts by anti-ICE activists in San Francisco to prevent arrests at a city immigration court. If you’re a regular reader you may remember this video.

There was a similar protest Wednesday with a similar group of masked activists trying to start a fight wit ICE. Once again they tried to prevent agents from exiting the building by using their bodies to block the door. Officers used pepper spray to clear them and were able to leave with someone in custody. But the activists continued to harass ICE officers in the street.

ICE officers encountered about 20 people who had gathered outside the court at 100 Montgomery St. Immigrants legally seeking asylum have been routinely arrested after their court hearings and flown to far-flung detention centers, and protesters often congregate outside court.

Witnesses said the two sides squared off — protesters trying to stop the vehicles, and ICE agents trying to get through.

“This car has ICE in it!” one protester yelled. “ICE is not welcome in San Francisco!” said another through a bullhorn as protesters stood in front of a silver minivan holding signs reading, “Stop your car to block ICE.”…

About a dozen ICE agents headed toward 630 Sansome St., the ICE headquarters about a half mile away, followed by protesters.

Several of the activist got carried away and one was arrested for destruction of property and threatening an officer. The person shouting into the camera in the first moments of this clip is the person who wound up getting arrested.

That individual is a trans person named Angelica aka Adrian Guer­rero. Here’s what promoted the arrest.

Pros­e­cu­tors say that An­gel­ica Guer­rero, aka Adrian Guer­rero, used a knife to slash the tire of a van be­ing used by De­part­ment of Home­land Se­cu­rity of­fi­cials to trans­port a just-de­tained sus­pect in the city’s fi­nan­cial dis­trict on Au­gust 20.

Guer­rero is ac­cused of then pur­su­ing DHS of­fi­cers down the street, telling them “I’m go­ing to f**k you up,” “I’m go­ing to go af­ter your fam­ily,” and “I’m go­ing to stab you,” while in pos­ses­sion of the blade.

There are photos of Guerrero slashing the tire of an ICE transport van and of the knife used.

However, because both charges are misdemeanors the judge released Guerrero. The next court date is some time in September.

“The Gov­ern­ment is ob­vi­ously very con­cerned about the con­duct put for­ward in the com­plaint,” said as­sis­tant U.S. at­tor­ney Dan Karmel, “but given the charges are mis­de­meanors…the gov­ern­ment is amenable to con­di­tions of re­lease – the main con­cern we have is the safety of fed­eral law en­force­ment and dam­age to fed­eral build­ings.”…

Karmel failed in a bid to have her pro­hib­ited from ap­proach­ing fed­eral of­fi­cials.

“What is she sup­posed to do if she sees a uni­formed fed­eral of­fi­cer – run away in the other di­rec­tion?” asked an ap­par­ently un­sym­pa­thetic Judge Kim to gales of laugh­ter from the gallery.

The judge eventually agreed to tell Guerrero to stay away from the immigration court. Finally, here’s a longer version of the video showing the arrest.
