What most aptly illustrates the relation of one politician to a stray piece of power: A vulture descending on a carcass? A shark discerning blood in the water?
When Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia announced he’ll be stepping away from his role as ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, high-profile Democrats immediately began eyeing his seat. Including Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas, according to Axios.
“I’m the vice ranker, so when I took the role on, I was [and] still am willing to step in, in service to the caucus and the country, but conversations need to be had before any formal announcement can be made,” she told the outlet.
It is refreshing to see Crockett attempting a run on the strength of her qualifications this time around. Just weeks ago, the representative bragged about obtaining a position as a public defender based on less mutable characteristics. “When I first became a public defender, I had no criminal defense experience. And I walked in and I told my boss … ‘Listen, you should hire me.’ He said, ‘Why?’ I said, ‘Because I’m black.’”

A few sweeps of her spidery eyelashes and the rest was history, I’m sure. This isn’t the first time Crockett has referenced this credential.
“I am a very serious lawmaker … at the same time, if you try me, you will find out … I am truly a black woman, at the same time,” she remarked in a speech. It’s very kind of Crockett to clear up any public confusion about the matter.

If Crockett would prefer the public focus on her appearance, it’s only because she’s not much more substantive than that. She appears to be spending her time in office cavorting through a series of embarrassing publicity stunts. There’s the suspiciously salt-of-the-Democrat-earth accent she’s acquired. There are the inappropriate divulgences regarding her dating life. There are the shouting matches she enjoys with colleagues.

And, of course, there are the usual jabs at the usual targets. “I am tired of the white tears,” she said on CNN. “Listen, if you are competent, you are not concerned. When I walk into Congress every single day, you know why I don’t feel a way and why you can’t make me doubt who I am?”
…Because she comes off as an entitled fraud?
“…Because I know that I had to work ten times as hard as they did just to get into the seat … the only people that are crying are the mediocre white boys that have been beaten out by people that historically have had to work so much harder.”
Ah, silly me. I’d nearly forgotten the emotional labor of stating “Because I’m black.” If Crockett is the future of the Democratic Party, the future of the Republican Party looks bright indeed.
