Savannah Guthrie: ‘We Need Your Help’

Savannah Guthrie posted a new message on her Instagram account this afternoon. After thanking viewers for their prayers on her and her mother’s behalf she said, “We believe our mom is still out there. We need your help.” She continued, “Law enforcement is working tirelessly, around the clock, trying to bring her home, trying to find her. She was taken and we don’t know where, and we need your help.

“I’m coming on just to ask you, not just for your prayers, but no matter where you are, even if you’re far from Tucson, if you see anything, you hear anything, if there’s anything at all that seems strange to you, that you report to law enforcement. We are at an hour of desperation and we need your help.”

Guthrie and her siblings released a video over the weekend saying they would pay the ransom being demanded by whoever is behind this. People is reporting that there were two different notes, each one asking for different amounts in the millions. 

The letter, sent to Arizona television stations KOLD and KGUN, specified two separate sums: $4 million in bitcoin due Thursday, Feb. 5, and if that was not met, an increased demand of $6 million by Monday, Feb. 9, the sources say.

A source confirmed with PEOPLE that as of 2:30 p.m. local time Monday, no payments have been made toward the bitcoin account provided in the note…

The alleged note did not include proof of life or a way for authorities and Nancy’s worried family to communicate with the people who sent it, Janke said. He added that the note mentioned an Apple Watch and a floodlight.

So the deadline appears to be today and it’s still not clear if they have actually paid. As of yesterday, authorities were saying they had no suspects in the case.

The Nancy Guthrie investigation is ongoing. Follow-up continues at multiple locations. No suspects, persons of interest, or vehicles have been identified. No scheduled press briefings. If any significant developments occur in the case, a press conference will be called.

Nancy Guthrie, the elderly victim, requires daily medication which she has apparently been without since the first of this month. 

The sheriff has said Guthrie does not have cognitive issues, characterizing her as “sharp as a tack.” However, he said, she has limited mobility and needs to take medication daily or “it could be fatal.” Nanos said he does not know whether Guthrie’s medication was still at her home.

“She is mobile. It’s a challenge for her to get, as the family says, she couldn’t walk 50 yards by herself,” he said.

She has a pacemaker — a device typically implanted under the skin to regulate heartbeat — which disconnected from its monitoring app on her phone early on Feb. 1.

The FBI says they aren’t aware of any further communication with the kidnappers. I’m not sure is this is meant as a commentary on paying the ransom or not.

Officials said they are “not aware of any continued communication between the Guthrie family and suspected kidnappers, nor have we identified a suspect or person of interest in this case at this time.”

I hope Nancy Guthrie is returned but I wonder if, even if the ransom is payed, the kidnappers would risk that. If she is still alive, she may have seen or heard something that could identify them. It’s a terrible situation and, unless these creeps are caught, you have to imagine the relatives of anyone with money are going to be at greater risk moving forward.
