MSNBC host Rachel Maddow and CBS’s Stephen Colbert pushed an unfounded narrative during Tuesday night’s episode of The Late Show, suggesting that the Republican Party, led by President Donald Trump, is aiming to eliminate elections altogether, as reported by Breitbart.

Colbert began the segment by expressing concern over what he described as a lack of accountability within the Republican Party.

“So, one of the things that’s interesting to me is that there’s such gross and obvious incompetence and disregard for our institutions, touching third rails like Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid,” Colbert said. He continued, “This is not the behavior of people — because Republicans haven’t stood up en masse to resist what Donald Trump has done.”

He added, “A few people here or there” have voiced objections but argued the overall pattern is troubling.

“This is not the behavior of people who seem like they believe they have to answer to voters in 18 months. That worries me. Not that they are not worried, but that they don’t think that they should be worried because maybe they don’t have to worry about an election at all.”

Following Colbert’s remarks, Maddow expanded on the theory. “He doesn’t think there should be elections,” she claimed, without offering documentation or specific examples to support her statement.

Maddow went on to assert:

“They are consolidating power, they’re disempowering Congress, ignoring Congress, defunding agencies or closing agencies. That’s Congress’s job, that’s not the president’s job. When they are defying court orders, that’s them saying the courts don’t have authority over the president, that’s consolidating all the power in one man, that’s authoritarianism, and that’s what you do when you don’t ever want to have an election because you want to stay in power for life, and that is what they are trying.”

President Trump, however, has publicly stated that this will be his final term and that he has no intention of seeking a third term.

In previous remarks, Trump said, “We have plenty of time” to achieve the goals of his administration, a position inconsistent with any claim of seeking permanent power.

The allegations from Maddow and Colbert come despite the fact that past Democrat presidents have frequently expanded executive authority without Congressional approval.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt notably served four terms.

In more recent years, Barack Obama signed 305 executive orders over eight years, while Joe Biden issued 167 during his single term. Both used executive authority to bypass Congress on several key issues.

No evidence was presented during the show to support claims that the Republican Party has any plans to cancel elections or alter the democratic process.

The remarks sparked reactions across social media, with critics pointing to a double standard in how executive actions are discussed depending on the party in power.
