Secretary of State Marco Rubio downplayed speculation about a potential 2028 presidential run during an interview aired Saturday, instead signaling his support for Vice President J.D. Vance as a future Republican nominee, as reported by Fox News.

Rubio made the comments while speaking with Lara Trump on her Fox News Channel program, My View with Lara Trump. When asked about his political future, Rubio emphasized his commitment to his current role and offered praise for Vance.

Vice President JD Vance departs a meeting with House Republicans at the United States Capitol as Republicans seek to pass interim spending bill that would keep federal agencies funded through Sept. 30 on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.

“I think J.D. Vance would be a great nominee if he decides he wants to do that,” Rubio said. He also referred to Vice President Vance as one of his “closest friends in politics.”

Rubio was appointed Secretary of State by President Donald Trump following Trump’s victory over former President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. Before joining the Trump Cabinet, Rubio served as a Republican U.S. Senator representing Florida.

During the interview, Rubio said he has no ambitions beyond his current post. “I want to do this job as long as the President allows me to,” he stated.

He expressed satisfaction with his contributions since joining the administration, citing the pace of progress over the last six months as a key indicator of success.

“I believe that if I am able to be here, through the duration of this presidency, and we get things done at the pace that we’ve been doing the last six months, I’ll be able to look back at my time in public service and say I made a difference, I had an impact, and I served my country in a very positive way,” Rubio said.

He concluded, “And I would be satisfied with that as the apex of my career.”

Rubio’s comments come amid early speculation about the Republican Party’s leadership beyond President Trump’s current term. Vance, a former U.S. senator from Ohio and now Vice President of the United States, has quickly gained prominence within the party.

His name has frequently appeared in early conversations about the party’s future direction after 2028.

Neither Rubio nor Vance has officially commented on any campaign plans related to the 2028 race.

President Trump, now in his second non-consecutive term, remains the party’s central figure, and members of his administration continue to focus on implementing key policy goals heading into the latter part of 2025.

Fox News Channel confirmed that additional segments from the interview would air throughout the weekend.
