A jaw-dropping revelation about the Secret Service’s failure to neutralize a would-be assassin targeting President-elect Donald Trump left Fox News host Jesse Watters floored.

During a recent segment, Watters dissected a House assassination task force report detailing how a Secret Service agent, standing just five feet away, fired six shots at the suspect and missed every single one, as reported by The New York Post.

A Palm Beach sheriff’s deputy and a couple of first responders stand on Gun Club Rd. behind Trump International Golf Club where the FBI is investigating an attempted assassination of Republican presidential candidate, former President Donald Trump on Sept. 15, 2024.

“How does a trained agent, someone who passed rigorous firearms tests, miss a target from five feet away? And not once, but six times?”

Watters asked incredulously. The agent’s misfire occurred on September 15 during Trump’s golf outing at his West Palm Beach club, highlighting glaring concerns over the agency’s marksmanship and preparedness.

The 180-page report sheds light on a tense encounter between the unnamed agent and the suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, a 58-year-old man who allegedly attempted to assassinate Trump.

While patrolling the perimeter of Trump International Golf Club, the agent spotted Routh’s rifle barrel protruding through a sniper’s nest along the fence line. Acting swiftly, the agent fired six shots toward Routh. However, all rounds failed to hit their mark, and Routh fled the scene unharmed.

Local law enforcement apprehended the suspect roughly 40 minutes later. Routh now faces five federal charges, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate.

Despite the miss, the report commended the agent’s rapid response, calling it a “critical line of defense” that may have averted a catastrophic outcome.

The report noted that the Secret Service implemented its standard “layered approach” to protection at the golf course. This methodology includes multiple rings of security, with an inner ring providing the closest defense around the president.

While the quick reaction of the agent was praised, critics question whether the agency’s training and protocols are sufficient for such high-stakes situations.

“He was only five feet away and he missed [Routh] not once, not twice, but six times,” Watters emphasized.

The Fox host’s criticism echoed broader concerns among conservatives about the competence of government agencies charged with safeguarding key political figures.

Routh, who never discharged his weapon during the incident, is now awaiting trial. Meanwhile, the FBI continues to investigate the ballistics from the scene. A heavily redacted portion of the report hints at further security flaws, but full details remain classified.

As the investigation unfolds, this alarming lapse raises serious questions about the Secret Service’s ability to effectively counter threats. For an agency tasked with protecting America’s leaders, failure is not an option—yet this incident exposes weaknesses that demand immediate attention.
