Selena Gomez, once the undisputed queen of Instagram with a staggering 422 million followers, is watching her numbers tumble.

The pop star has reportedly lost nearly 808,500 followers in the last month, with backlash mounting over her tearful video condemning deportations under former President Donald Trump’s policies, as reported by The Daily Mail.

Yahoo really wants people to believe that Selena Gomez lost 130,000 followers between January 27th and January 29th, because she spoke crappy Spanish in a movie that came out months ago.

Earlier this week, Gomez posted—and quickly deleted—a sobbing video where she lamented the deportation of illegal immigrants, particularly those from Mexico.

“All my people are getting attacked, the children. I don’t understand. I’m so sorry, I wish I could do something but I can’t.”

While she may have intended to stir sympathy, she instead sparked a firestorm of criticism, particularly from conservatives who saw the video as another out-of-touch Hollywood display.

Gomez, 32, is no stranger to wading into political issues, but this latest incident appears to have cost her dearly. Conservative voices, including U.S. Senate candidate Sam Parker, didn’t hold back.

Parker even suggested Gomez should be deported herself, a remark that prompted the singer to mockingly respond, “Oh Mr. Parker, Mr. Parker. Thanks for the laugh and the threat.”

The backlash wasn’t limited to political figures. Trump’s former border czar Tom Homan dismissed her emotional meltdown, stating, “If they don’t like it, then go to Congress and change the law. We’re going to do this operation without apology.”

Adding to the growing criticism, British journalist Piers Morgan weighed in, calling her video “a new level of absurd celebrity narcissism.”

Meanwhile, social media users blasted her as “shallow” and “performative,” with many pointing out her estimated $1.3 billion net worth. Instead of crying on camera, critics argued, she could use her wealth to help struggling migrants in their own countries.

Gomez’s Instagram following has taken a hit since the controversy erupted. Data from CritiqueJeu revealed that she lost over 116,000 followers within 24 hours of posting the video, marking her largest single-day drop. Over the past month, the decline has reached nearly 808,500.

Paul Lenglet, co-founder of CritiqueJeu, noted, “Selena Gomez had a great end to 2024, but the start of 2025 has not been so gentle on her.”

He attributed the backlash not only to her ill-received video but also to her latest film, Emilia Pérez, which, despite earning 13 Academy Award nominations, has been slammed by critics and audiences alike.

Gomez’s Spanish-speaking skills in the film have also come under scrutiny, further alienating viewers.

Selena Gomez, an American actress and founder of Wondermind, listens to comments from Jessica Stern during a featured session on mental health during South by Southwest at the Austin Convention Center on Sunday, March 10, 2024.

An insider revealed to MailOnline that Gomez deleted the video out of concern that it made her look “weak” and risked alienating Republican consumers of her Rare Beauty brand.

“She realizes that she cannot go up against a Republican-backed nation—many of whom are loyal customers of her Rare Beauty brand,” the source explained. “She does not wish to alienate.”

This isn’t the first time Gomez has spoken out on immigration. In 2019, she produced the Netflix documentary Living Undocumented, highlighting the struggles of illegal immigrants in the U.S.

She also shared her family’s own immigration story, recounting how her aunt crossed the border in the back of a truck in the 1970s.

While Gomez has long used her platform to advocate for liberal causes, this latest controversy may serve as a wake-up call.

With social media followers fleeing and critics slamming her for performative activism, the Only Murders in the Building star might be rethinking her approach to politics.

For now, at least, she appears to be backing away from the spotlight, hoping to salvage her brand before more damage is done.
