Former Clinton pollster Doug Schoen ripped Democratic National Committee (DNC) Vice Chair David Hogg Monday over his plans to primary aging Democratic members of Congress.
Hogg announced plans Tuesday to spend $20 million to primary incumbents who he viewed as lacking the will to fight, prompting criticism from former Clinton advisor James Carville for using his leadership position to target incumbents, including Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California. Schoen expressed dismay at Hogg’s plan, saying that it would be “self-defeating” for Democrats to “fight among ourselves.” (RELATED: ‘The Party Has Been Taken Over’: Former Clinton Pollster Tells Harris Faulkner ‘Far Left’ Made Democratic Party ‘Unrecognizable’)

“I think that’s about the worst idea, Harris, that I have heard lately. James Carville is, in this instance, very much on the money correct,” Schoen told Fox News host Harris Faulkner. “We Democrats need to offer different policies from the Republicans, support programs that Democrats traditionally are for like Medicare, Social Security, Medicaid, and differentiate ourselves, not fight among ourselves in a way that will be self-defeating and self-destructive. It makes no sense, what David Hogg is doing.”
Schoen hinted that many more moderate Democrats were being drowned out by left-wing activists like Hogg.
“In the Clinton years, there was a strong number of moderate voices,” Schoen complained. “Now, very few of us left, the left is in the ascendancy in terms of loudness, not in terms of numbers.”
Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York received criticism from left-wing media figures and Democrats in Congress over his decision to help pass a GOP-backed spending bill to prevent a government shutdown in March, with Democratic Rep. Glenn Ivey of Maryland calling for Schumer’s replacement as leader of Senate Democrats.
Democrats’ favorability has plummeted to 29%, according to a CNN poll released in March. A Gallup poll released Thursday showed that only 25% of Americans had confidence in Democratic congressional leadership.
