The Trump administration, working alongside Elon Musk, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has intensified its review of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) spending, leading to strong opposition from Democrats.
The administration’s efforts have halted the unchecked flow of taxpayer money overseas, particularly in Ukraine, prompting heated reactions from lawmakers and bureaucrats alike.
Amid these investigations, concerns have emerged over threats directed at members of the DOGE team after WIRED magazine publicly identified several of them.

The acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia has issued a warning that such threats will not be tolerated, and law enforcement is now involved in addressing the situation.
Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) revealed that she had also faced threats in the past when she began examining USAID’s financial practices.
Speaking about the recent developments, Ernst noted that concerns over USAID’s funding mechanisms were not new and that efforts to ensure accountability have long been necessary.
“This has been a problem for a while, and it’s long since time that they be held accountable,” Ernst said.
The scrutiny surrounding DOGE’s involvement has led to criticism from Democrats, who claim the team is an “unelected” group gaining unauthorized access to government data.
However, DOGE is not an independent entity but rather a renamed version of the U.S. Digital Service, a unit within the Executive Office of the President.
The team, operating under President Donald Trump’s authority, is tasked with auditing government agencies to ensure transparency in federal spending.
Critics arguing against DOGE’s authority are effectively challenging the president’s constitutional right to oversee the executive branch.
Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) addressed the controversy during an appearance on Hannity Monday night, taking aim at those objecting to the administration’s oversight efforts.
“It’s kind of cool to have a president again after four years of a mess,” Kennedy remarked.
He went on to make a colorful analogy while explaining why budget oversight is necessary.
“I like omelets, and I could eat omelets at every meal. I like omelets better than sex. Um, not really, but you get the point—I like omelets. But you can’t make an omelet without breaking some eggs,” he said.
Kennedy noted that Trump had campaigned on the promise of reviewing “every single penny” in the federal budget, emphasizing that oversight is a fundamental part of ensuring taxpayer dollars are spent appropriately.
“Now how are you going to review the spending in the federal budget without reviewing the spending?” Kennedy asked. “And that’s what Mr. Musk is doing.”
Kennedy also criticized the response from some officials at USAID, whom he referred to as “tofu-eating wokeratti,” for objecting to Musk’s oversight of the agency’s financial activities.
“Many of my Democratic colleagues and some of the tofu-eating wokeratti at the USAID are screaming like they’re part of a prison riot because they don’t want us reviewing the spending,” he said. “But that’s all Mr. Musk is doing, and he’s finding some pretty interesting stuff. To my friends who are upset, I would say, with respect, you know, call somebody who cares…They better get used to this. It’s USAID today, it’s going to be the Department of Education tomorrow.”
Kennedy pointed out that under Joe Biden, Democrats repeatedly focused on tax increases.
“For four years, these people asked one simple question: ‘Who needs to pay more in taxes?’” Kennedy said. “Well, that’s not the question that the Republicans and President Trump are going to ask. Our question is, ‘What the hell happened to the money?’”

Kennedy suggested that Musk should publish his findings in a book, hold a press conference, and break down the government’s spending habits line by line.
“Call a press conference in front of God and country… and say ‘do you [Democrats]want to defend this?’ They won’t, they can’t.,” Kennedy concluded.

As the Trump administration expands its investigation into government spending, scrutiny over USAID’s financial practices is expected to continue.
Meanwhile, tensions between the administration and its critics show no signs of cooling, as Democrats push back against efforts to hold agencies accountable for how taxpayer dollars are used.
