Republican Louisiana Senator John Kennedy appeared on Fox News Friday evening to criticize the federal government’s wasteful spending, calling it “spending porn” and suggesting the money would be better spent on “scratch tickets and blackjack.”
Kennedy’s comments come amid ongoing efforts by Democrats to oppose the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, as the department works to identify areas of government spending that need to be reduced.
The controversy surrounding DOGE and Musk’s efforts has been escalating since February.
Elon Musk Called This Financial News ‘Terrifying’
On The Ingraham Angle, guest host Judge Jeanine Pirro asked Kennedy for his take on the pushback against Musk and DOGE’s attempts to reduce wasteful government spending. Kennedy responded, saying Musk’s efforts to control spending were “the most important in the history of ever, certainly in my lifetime.”
He pointed out that while Democrats have advocated for raising taxes, the American people are asking, “What the hell happened to the money?”
Kennedy went on to provide a comparison between the growth in the U.S. population and the increase in government spending.
“Since 2019, America’s population is up 2%. Spending’s up 55%,” Kennedy noted.
“President Biden’s favorite type of spending was more. This led to inflation and debt. But it wasn’t just the quantity. It was the quality, as Mr. Musk is showing us.”

In a recent Fox News interview, Musk discussed the challenges of federal spending, particularly within agencies like the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Social Security Administration (SSA), stating that these agencies could be managed more efficiently.
Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has taken a close look at government spending, aiming to identify areas where waste is prevalent and recommending cuts.
Kennedy criticized the government for what he called “spending porn.”
He explained that much of the government’s spending was on projects that do not provide value to the American people, describing them as “money sucks.”
He argued, “We’d be better off spending this money on scratch tickets and blackjack,” reflecting his belief that much of the federal government’s expenditures are wasteful and poorly managed.
Kennedy also offered a solution for controlling inflation and reducing prices.
“We will never get prices down and control inflation until we deregulate the economy so goods and services will cost less, until we design a tax code that looks like somebody designed it on purpose, and until we control spending,” he said.
“That’s just Econ 101.”
In a shocking example of wasteful spending, Musk told Fox News’ Bret Baier about a federal government survey that cost nearly a billion dollars.
The survey, which asked just 10 questions, could have been conducted for a fraction of that cost, Musk explained.
“A billion dollars for a simple online survey—‘Do you like the National Park?’ and then there appeared to be no feedback loop for what would be done with that survey,” Musk said.
“So the survey would just go into nothing. It was insane.”
The pushback against Musk’s involvement with DOGE began in February after he and President Donald Trump announced plans to overhaul the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which had been criticized for wasting billions of taxpayer dollars.
Since then, lawmakers have voiced strong opposition to DOGE’s efforts, with some claiming they are now at “war” with the administration over its push to eliminate government waste.
As Musk and the DOGE team continue their mission to reform government spending, they face mounting resistance from Democrats and bureaucrats within Washington.
However, supporters argue that Musk’s push for efficiency is necessary to address the growing issues of inflation, national debt, and wasteful government spending.
The future of DOGE and its proposed changes will likely remain a point of contention in Washington as these debates continue to unfold.
