Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) weighed in on the growing tensions within the Democratic Party following Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s decision to support a Republican-led government funding bill, a move that has sparked backlash among progressive Democrats.
During an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Kennedy praised Schumer for helping to avoid a government shutdown but pointed to the internal strife it has caused within the Democratic Party.
“I don’t hate anybody, and that includes Senator Schumer. He’s very smart,” Kennedy said.
“On the other hand, Chuck’s often wrong. He never makes the same mistake twice, he makes it five or six times just to be sure. But this time he got it right in supporting our efforts to keep government open. Unless a football coach taught you history, you understand that shutting government down never achieves anything. It just scares people, especially the elderly.”

Kennedy went on to describe Schumer’s declining popularity among his own party following the vote.
“Many Democrats are angry at Schumer. Among them right now, we’ve all seen the news, he’s about as popular as chlamydia,” Kennedy said.
He added that the outrage among Democrats revealed deeper issues within the party.

“But that, to me, says as much about the Democratic Party as it does about Senator Schumer,” he said.
“What it tells me is that the loon wing of the Democratic Party is firmly in control. Now, that’s great for the Republican Party, but it’s bad for America.”
The bipartisan funding bill, which passed with the support of Schumer and a number of other Democratic senators, prevented a government shutdown but has stirred debate among progressive Democrats who felt it compromised too heavily with Republican priorities.
Since the vote, some House Democrats have called for Schumer to resign from his leadership role, although no Senate Democrats have echoed that call.
Kennedy also addressed broader concerns about the ideological direction of the Democratic Party, questioning positions taken by some of its members.
“These people are deeply weird,” Kennedy said.
“For example, no honest person whose IQ is above his age doesn’t believe that biological sex doesn’t exist, but they do. That’s what I mean when I say they’re deeply weird.”
He continued by outlining what he described as the Republican strategy for addressing far-left positions.
“Our Republican secret plan for dealing with the Democrats is called Operation Let Them Speak, and that’s good for our party, but it’s bad for America, and I think Schumer did the right thing,” Kennedy said.

The comments come amid continued division in Washington over budget negotiations and party leadership decisions.
While the funding bill avoided a shutdown, it has reignited debates over party unity and legislative priorities, particularly within the Democratic ranks.
At the time of publication, no official response had been issued by Senator Schumer regarding the remarks or the internal calls for his resignation.
The Senate is expected to continue negotiations on longer-term appropriations in the coming weeks.
