Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) is making headlines once again, this time for comments aimed at New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.
In a fundraising email sent Thursday evening, Kennedy took sharp aim at the self-described democratic socialist, referring to Mamdani as a “theocratic communist” and warning of the broader implications of his rise within the Democratic Party.
“What is going on in New York?” Kennedy wrote.

“Democrats just elected a theocratic communist in the NYC Mayoral Primary, and I’ve never seen such a wokester win an election in my lifetime.”
Kennedy, known for his colorful language and blunt style, compared Mamdani’s platform to Marxist ideologies taken to extremes.
“Zohran Mamdani is as socialist and communist as it gets,” the senator continued.
“He wants to turn New York City into a North Korean wasteland. He’s like Karl Marx at a drag show…”

The Louisiana Republican’s remarks came in the wake of Mamdani’s recent victory in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary.
Mamdani currently serves in the New York State Assembly and has aligned himself with far-left platforms, including police defunding and government-managed economics.
In his email, Kennedy highlighted several of Mamdani’s previous statements and policy positions, quoting the candidate’s remarks such as: “There must be a better distribution of wealth for all of God’s children in this country,” and “Queer liberation means defund the police.”
Another statement included in the message was, “Kick the fascist ICE out of New York City.”
Kennedy, who serves on the Senate Judiciary and Appropriations Committees, went on to criticize Mamdani’s policy proposals more directly.
“He’s even said he wants to ‘Trump-proof’ NYC and start up government-run grocery stores,” Kennedy wrote.
“He’s built a campaign based on hatred for one man – President Trump. I don’t know what’s more embarrassing… the fact that he ran a campaign like that or the fact that New Yorkers bought into it.”
Mamdani has made headlines for promoting policies that include municipalizing grocery stores, eliminating ICE presence in the city, and reconfiguring law enforcement priorities.
He has also campaigned on a platform of creating what he describes as a “more just and equitable” city by redistributing public wealth and rejecting federal immigration enforcement.

Kennedy closed the email by warning supporters about what he views as the growing influence of socialist ideology within the Democratic Party.
“Folks, if we don’t nip it in the bud now, these commies will spread socialism throughout the rest of America,” he wrote.
The comments arrive amid a larger national conversation about the direction of the Democratic Party, particularly in urban areas where progressive and socialist candidates have seen increased success in recent years.
President Donald Trump has previously criticized Mamdani’s platform, warning that any interference with federal immigration law would result in consequences.
Trump recently stated at a rally, “If he interferes with immigration laws, we’ll have to arrest him.”

Mamdani has responded to critics by accusing them of attempting to silence political opposition.
In a statement earlier this week, he said, “This is an attempt to send a message to every New Yorker who refuses to hide in the shadows: if you speak up, they will come for you.”
Senator Kennedy has been one of the most outspoken conservative voices in the U.S. Senate, known for his use of plain language and Southern wit to express criticism of progressive policies and political figures.
His remarks regarding Mamdani are the latest in a series of public rebukes aimed at prominent Democrats advocating for far-left policies.
Mamdani is expected to face Republican opposition in the general election, though New York City remains a heavily Democratic stronghold.
