During the Senate confirmation hearing for Pete Hegseth’s nomination as Secretary of Defense, Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) delivered a fiery critique of what he described as hypocrisy among senators, particularly those from the opposing party.
Mullin questioned their moral authority to judge qualifications, citing inconsistencies in the treatment of Democratic and Republican nominees and raising concerns about senators’ personal conduct.
Mullin accused senators of holding nominees to a higher standard than they hold themselves, stating, “There’s a lot about qualifications, and I think it’s so hypocritical of senators, especially on the other side of the house, to be talking about his qualifications… yet your qualifications aren’t any better.”

He emphasized that the qualifications for Secretary of Defense are minimal, primarily requiring the nominee to be a civilian and, if previously in military service, to have retired for at least seven years. “I googled it and went through a lot of different sites… In general, the US Secretary of Defense position is filled by a civilian. That’s it,” Mullin said.
Mullin pointed out the perceived inconsistency in how senators have treated Republican versus Democratic nominees.
He referenced the waiver granted to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, a Biden appointee, due to his prior service and a position on the board of defense contractor Raytheon.
“There’s questions that the senator from Massachusetts brought up about serving on a board inside the military industry,” Mullin said.
“And yet, your own Secretary that you all voted for, Secretary of Austin, we had to vote on a waiver because he stepped off the board of Raytheon. But I guess that’s okay because that’s a Democrat Secretary of Defense. But we so quickly forget about that.”
Mullin further challenged the moral authority of senators to judge others, pointing to personal misconduct among some members.
“Senator Kaine—or I guess I better use the senator from Virginia—starts bringing up the fact that, what if you showed up drunk to your job? How many senators have showed up drunk to vote at night? Have any of you guys asked them to step down and resign for their job? And don’t tell me you haven’t seen it, because I know you have,” he said.
He also referenced instances of infidelity among senators, saying, “How many senators do you know have gotten a divorce before cheating on their wives? Did you ask them to step down? No, but it’s for show.”
Mullin concluded his remarks by highlighting the need for self-reflection among senators. “It is so ridiculous that you guys hold yourself as this higher standard, and you forget you got a big plank in your eye,” he said, urging his colleagues to reconsider their approach to judging nominees like Hegseth.
