Former New York gubernatorial candidate and actress Cynthia Nixon has urged her followers to boycott Disney after the company suspended late-night host Jimmy Kimmel.
Nixon’s call came after Kimmel mocked President Donald Trump’s public mourning of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated on September 10, and falsely claimed Kirk’s killer was part of “the MAGA gang.”
In a video posted to social media, Nixon announced she had canceled her subscriptions to Disney+ and Hulu in protest of Kimmel’s suspension.
“Hey, I just cancelled my Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions, and they asked me why. I hit ‘Other’ and I wrote, ‘Because I believe in the First Amendment. Reinstate Jimmy Kimmel, now,’” Nixon said.
“My whole family is really gonna miss ‘Abbott Elementary.’ We are really gonna miss ‘Only Murders in the Building.’ But you know what? We would miss the First Amendment a whole lot more.”
She went further, calling on her supporters to avoid all Disney-related businesses.
“Don’t go to the theme parks. Don’t go on the cruises. Cancel your subscriptions, now,” Nixon said.

The controversy began after Kimmel made remarks on his late-night program about President Trump’s reaction to Kirk’s assassination.
In addition to mocking the president, Kimmel falsely suggested that Kirk’s alleged killer was affiliated with Trump supporters, describing him as part of “the MAGA gang.”
That claim was swiftly debunked, as prosecutors in Utah confirmed the suspect, Tyler Robinson, 22, had expressed political views in support of LGBTQ+ activism and had become increasingly hostile toward conservatives, including Kirk.
Just 48 hours after the broadcast, ABC affiliates Nexstar and Sinclair announced they were pulling Jimmy Kimmel Live from their stations.
Both companies cited objections to Kimmel’s comments about Kirk’s death.
“Nexstar strongly objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programming in its ABC-affiliated markets,” Nexstar said in a statement.
Sinclair issued a similar announcement confirming it would suspend airing Kimmel’s show in its broadcast lineup.
Disney has not issued a detailed public statement beyond confirming that Kimmel was placed on suspension following the controversy.
The move came after mounting pressure from viewers and elected officials who had criticized Kimmel’s remarks as disrespectful to the family and supporters of Kirk.
Kirk, 31, was killed during a Turning Point USA “Prove Me Wrong” debate event at Utah Valley University.
Robinson was arrested two days later in Washington County, Utah, and charged with aggravated murder, among other offenses.
Prosecutors have indicated they intend to pursue the death penalty in the case.
Nixon, best known for her role on Sex and the City and for her 2018 run for New York governor, positioned her protest as a free speech issue.
Her boycott call has fueled debate on social media, with some backing her message and others pointing out the difference between free speech protections from government action and the contractual consequences of broadcast networks and private companies.
The suspension of Kimmel, coupled with Nixon’s call for a boycott of Disney, highlights the wider fallout from remarks made in the wake of Kirk’s assassination.
The dispute over Kimmel’s comments continues to draw responses from both political and entertainment circles as Disney, its affiliates, and critics grapple with the backlash.
