Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recent appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” took an unexpected turn when anti-Israel protesters interrupted her discussion on the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Pelosi, who was in Chicago to participate in the Democratic National Convention, had been discussing her book, “The Art of Power,” when the conversation shifted to the ongoing cease-fire negotiations between Israel and Hamas.
The first interruption came as Pelosi addressed the issue, with a protester shouting, “Free Palestine!” The outburst quickly shifted the tone of the conversation, focusing attention on the United States’ role in the Middle East conflict.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that the protester questioned the U.S.’s involvement, particularly in providing military aid to Israel.
Stephen Colbert, the host of the show, momentarily paused the program to address the disruption, reassuring the audience that he would pose the protester’s question to Pelosi.
Upon returning from the break, Pelosi addressed the audience, acknowledging the protester’s concerns.

“We just got word earlier today that Israel had agreed to the cease-fire agreement. We’re hoping Hamas will too. But it takes me to the point of saying to you, ‘War has no role in a civilized society,’” Pelosi said, stressing her belief in the importance of peace and mutual understanding over conflict.
Another protester, however, disrupted the discussion again, underscoring the intensity of the emotions surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict.
As Pelosi attempted to continue, Colbert noted that the anti-Israel protesters outside the venue were dissatisfied with her response, highlighting the deep divisions on this issue.
Colbert, trying to maintain order, pleaded with the protesters to allow Pelosi to speak, explaining that they had criticized the U.S. for supplying Israel with arms used in the conflict in Gaza.
Pelosi responded by reaffirming Israel’s right to self-defense, especially in light of the horrific Hamas terror attack on October 7, 2023. “Israel has a right to defend itself, and the hostages should be returned,” Pelosi asserted.

As the conversation continued, Pelosi suggested that the only viable path to lasting peace in the region was through a two-state solution. “You cannot have peace unless you have a two-state solution,” Pelosi stated, drawing applause from the audience.
She emphasized the necessity of both a secure, Jewish, democratic state for Israel and a secure nation for the Palestinians. “Unless we have a two-state solution, we’ll not have a resolution to this,” Pelosi added, reiterating her belief that this approach is the only path to true peace.
Despite the interruptions and the emotionally charged atmosphere, Pelosi remained composed, continuing to advocate for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
However, the interruptions did not stop, prompting Colbert to step in once more. “Please don’t interrupt my guests,” Colbert urged, trying to keep the conversation on track.
As the show neared its conclusion, Colbert, acknowledging the live nature of the broadcast, had to bring the discussion to a close.

He invited Pelosi to return for a more in-depth conversation in the future. “Madam Speaker, we’re a live show, so we have to go at this point. Please come again, and we can continue the conversation,” Colbert said, signaling the end of the segment.
Pelosi’s appearance on “The Late Show” was part of a series of events she attended in Chicago during the Democratic National Convention.
Her time at the convention also garnered attention, particularly during President Joe Biden’s appearance. Pelosi’s demeanor during a chant of “We love Joe” appeared less than enthusiastic, reflecting the complicated dynamics within the Democratic Party.
Recent reports suggest that Pelosi had been instrumental in pushing Biden to step down from the 2024 presidential race, fearing his candidacy could harm the party’s chances in the upcoming elections.
Pelosi had even threatened to publicly criticize Biden if he did not end his re-election bid, which ultimately led Biden to withdraw from the race in July.
Despite the tensions, Pelosi defended her actions during the convention, telling CNN, “Sometimes you have to take a punch for the children. I did what I had to do.”
Her remarks indicate a deep sense of duty to the future of the Democratic Party and the nation, even if it meant making difficult and potentially controversial decisions.
Pelosi’s appearance on “The Late Show” and her role in the Democratic National Convention highlight her continued influence within the party and her unwavering commitment to her principles, even in the face of criticism and protest.
The events of the night underscore the complex and often contentious nature of the Israel-Palestine conflict and the broader political dynamics at play in the United States.
As Pelosi continues to navigate these challenges, her words and actions will likely remain a focal point in the ongoing debate over the future of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.
