Two young girls from El Salvador, ages 5 and 9, were abandoned at the U.S.-Mexico border this past weekend, clutching nothing but a handwritten note, as reported by The New York Post.

The heartbreaking scene unfolded in Eagle Pass, Texas, where Texas Department of Public Safety troopers found the children.

The girls, dressed in matching black T-shirts, carried a scrap of paper with a phone number and address hastily scrawled on it. Lt. Chris Olivarez of Texas DPS shared their story on X, formerly known as Twitter, along with a photo of the frightened children.

“Troopers recovered two unaccompanied female children left abandoned by a smuggler in Eagle Pass who fled back to Mexico,” Olivarez reported.

Once discovered, the girls were handed over to U.S. Border Patrol agents. Beyond the basics of their discovery, few details about their ordeal or the identities behind the contact information have been released.

This tragic story is far from isolated. It’s yet another disturbing chapter in the ongoing border crisis, where children are routinely treated as pawns in the dangerous games of human smuggling.

Unaccompanied minors often arrive with little more than a note pinned to their clothes or sewn into their belongings, bearing phone numbers of relatives or acquaintances.

Incoming Texas Department of Public Safety Director Freeman Martin, left, and outgoing Director Steve McCraw stand for the national anthem at a change of command ceremony at DPS Headquarters Monday December 2, 2024. Martin, who was previously the DPS Senior Deputy Director, will serve as the department’s fourteenth director. Former DPS Director Steve McCraw announced his plans to retire in August after 15 years of leading the department. He officially retired from DPS on Nov. 30.

Last month, a 2-year-old migrant girl from El Salvador made headlines when she arrived at the border alone, telling authorities she had come to find her parents.

Her story, like so many others, underscores the perilous journeys these children face and the untenable situation created by the Biden administration’s lax border policies.

Since President Biden took office, over 529,000 migrant children have crossed the border, according to recent data from Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

President Joe Biden formally apologizes for abuses committed against Native boarding school students over the past century during a visit to the Gila Crossing Community School on Oct. 25, 2024, in the Gila River Indian Community.

Alarmingly, a report from August revealed that the administration has lost track of more than 320,000 of these minors. Critics argue this staggering failure highlights the administration’s inability—or unwillingness—to address the humanitarian crisis unfolding at the border.

The situation raises urgent questions about the safety and future of these children. Smugglers continue to exploit vulnerable families, relying on weak enforcement to carry out their illicit activities.

Meanwhile, the administration seems more focused on political spin than taking tangible steps to secure the border and protect the innocent lives caught in this chaos.

As stories like this continue to surface, it’s clear that the human cost of these policies is far too high.

Abandoning children at the border with nothing but a scrap of paper is not just an indictment of smugglers—it’s a searing critique of an administration that has abdicated its responsibility to enforce the law and protect the vulnerable.
