Socialist NYC Mayoral Candidate’s Agenda Starts With Your Kids

Equality is easy. All you have to do is make everything terrible for everyone. 

That’s precisely what Zohran Mamdani, New York City’s socialist mayoral candidate, has in mind for the city’s children. Mamdani is no fringe candidate. Last night, he secured the Democratic nomination for mayor. His education plan is just as rotten as his other policies. “New York State continues to uphold policies that perpetuate educational and residential segregation … As a graduate of Bronx Science, I have personally witnessed just how segregated New York City public schools are, especially our specialized high schools,” Mamdani told the The Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club in 2022. “I support measures to integrate our public schools and fully fund our education system, including the abolition of the [Specialized High Schools Admission Test (SHSAT)].” The SHSAT is the sole criteria for entrance into eight of New York City’s most prestigious public high schools.

As of this year, Mamdani “said he’d support an independent analysis of the SHSAT for gender and racial bias,” according to Chalkbeat. 

The purpose of any admissions standard is to sort qualified candidates from unqualified candidates. That is, to segregate them.  

Bronx High School of Science has a predominantly Asian student body (60.4%), followed by white (21.3%), according to U.S. News and World Report. It is unlikely that school administrators are conspiring to give preferential treatment to Asian applicants. It is very likely that Asian applicants turn in higher SHSAT scores than their competitors. Refer to disparities in standardized testing scores among Ivy League applicants. Bronx High School’s current screening process appears fairly finely tuned. 

Bronx High School of Science has produced the most Nobel Laureates of any secondary school in the world, with nine alumni nabbing the prize. Nine alumni have also won the Pulitzer Prize. Bronx High School is consistently ranked the among the best of New York City Public Schools, and ranks among the top forty public schools in the country, according to U.S. News and World Reports. Almost all graduates go on to four year colleges. 

A high school, like a country, does not function independently of the quality of its people. Bronx High School is not magical; Unintelligent students will not transform into intelligent ones by virtue of stepping foot on campus. 

So I’m trying to do my due diligence on Mamdani, and it’s not good.

Mamdani isn’t just taking aim at talented high schoolers. He’s set on eliminating opportunities for intelligent elementary and middle schoolers, too. If elected, Mamdani plans to implement recommendations from the 2019 School District Advisory Group. A few standouts on their agenda:

• “Discontinue the use of the Gifted & Talented admissions test”
• “Expand and support the use of inclusionary admissions practices”
• “Eliminate the use of exclusionary admissions practices that create segregation by race, class, disability, home language, and academic ability. This includes the exclusionary use of school screens such as grades, test scores, auditions, performance in interviews, behavior, lateness, and attendance.”

The group’s contempt for gifted and talented individuals – or even just individuals who can sit up straight in an interview – is barely contained.

No one can “redistribute” intelligence. But they can make it much more difficult for smart kids to capitalize on their abilities. Expect excellence of all kinds to be persecuted under a Mamdani-governed NYC.
