Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham confirmed Tuesday that her season is over after suffering an MCL tear in her right knee during Sunday’s overtime victory against the Connecticut Sun, as reported by The New York Post.

Cunningham, 29, was injured in the second quarter of the 99-93 win at Mohegan Sun Arena when she collided with Sun guard Bria Hartley. She immediately felt pain and was seen holding her knee on the baseline.

Speaking on the Show Me Something podcast, Cunningham said she knew instantly the injury was serious.

“I was just in the paint trying to be help side and someone ran into my knee and it just snapped … I felt a pop right away,” she recalled. Cunningham said she will undergo surgery but did not share further details.

Despite the season-ending injury, Cunningham told fans she is in “really good spirits” and expressed gratitude to her teammates and the organization.

“If you’re going to hurt your knee, that is like the best possible case,” she said. “I’m just thankful to be where I’m at and be with the organization and the girls that I’m with because they have brought life and my love of basketball back.”

Cunningham also addressed speculation circulating online that Hartley, her longtime friend, intentionally caused the injury. She dismissed the idea, emphasizing there was no malicious intent.

“No, I don’t, because I know Bria and I’m actually really good friends with Bria,” Cunningham said.

“I think that there was no ill intent. I think that it was a basketball play. I was just in the wrong spot at the wrong time. She fell. Like, there’s no way that she would go in there and potentially try to hurt me.”

She added that she even told her mother to delete a social media post critical of Hartley. “‘No Mom, I get it. I promise, Bria and I are super cool and she would never try to hurt me,’” Cunningham said.

The Fever announced Monday that they signed veteran guard Shey Peddy to a seven-day hardship contract to fill Cunningham’s roster spot, while releasing guard Kyra Lambert in a corresponding move.

Cunningham played in 30 games this season, starting 13, and averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists while shooting 46.9 percent from the field. Her presence was particularly valuable with All-Star Caitlin Clark sidelined the past month with a groin injury.

The Fever have faced multiple setbacks this season, with guards Sydney Colson (torn ACL) and Aari McDonald (broken foot) already ruled out for the year. Indiana acquired Cunningham and the No. 19 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft from Phoenix in the offseason.

The Fever (19-16) face the league-leading Minnesota Lynx (28-5) on Friday at home and again Sunday in Minneapolis.
