Federal bribery charges have been brought against Soros-backed Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens and Jackson, Mississippi, Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, according to an indictment from the U.S. Department of Justice.
Owens and Lumumba are accused of accepting significant bribes from undercover FBI informants posing as real estate developers with interests in downtown Jackson projects.
The Justice Department alleges that Owens solicited $115,000 from the undercover informants, with instructions to pass $50,000 of that sum to Lumumba.

According to court documents, Lumumba allegedly accepted the funds in return for “exerting his influence and taking official action” on behalf of the developers’ proposed projects.
If convicted, both Owens and Lumumba face up to 20 years in prison.
Owens, who was elected as district attorney in 2019 with support from prominent Democratic and progressive backers, reportedly received $500,000 from the Mississippi Justice and Public Safety PAC, funded by billionaire George Soros.
Owens’ campaign focused on criminal justice reforms and “alternatives to incarceration,” aligning with Soros’s progressive criminal justice agenda.
Additionally, Owens has previously worked as an attorney for the Southern Poverty Law Center and has faced accusations of sexual harassment during his campaign.
While in office, he was also accused of brandishing a firearm during an incident at his chief of staff’s residence.
The indictment against Lumumba marks a serious setback for the Jackson mayor, who has also enjoyed support from key political allies.
Lumumba was endorsed by Senator Bernie Sanders in 2021, who praised his commitment to “justice, progress, and equity.” At the time, Sanders commented, “I’m proud to endorse Mayor Chokwe Lumumba for reelection because he is a consistent fighter for the working families of Jackson, Mississippi.”
The Justice Department stated that the case reflects its ongoing commitment to prosecuting public corruption. Nicole M. Argentieri, head of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, said, “Officials who abuse their positions of authority to enrich themselves undermine public confidence in government. The Justice Department is committed to restoring that confidence by working with its law enforcement partners to investigate and prosecute public corruption.”
According to the indictment, Owens was recorded making explicit statements about the alleged bribes during several conversations with undercover FBI agents between October 2023 and May 2024.
The Washington Free Beacon reported that Owens allegedly expressed indifference about the origin of the funds, saying, “I don’t give a sht where the money comes from. It can come from blood diamonds in Africa, I don’t give a fcking sht. I’m a whole DA. Fck that sh*t. My job, as I understand it, with a little paperwork, is to get this deal done, and get it done most effectively.”
The indictment of Owens places him alongside other high-profile district attorneys with Soros-backed campaigns who have recently faced scrutiny.
Former St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner, also supported by Soros funding, resigned in May 2023 following criticism of her handling of a violent crime case involving a repeat offender.
Gardner faced public backlash after the suspect violated his bond dozens of times and ultimately caused a car accident that paralyzed a teenage girl.
Both Owens and Lumumba pleaded not guilty to the charges in court on Thursday, signaling their intent to contest the allegations.
