Sports commentator Stephen A. Smith said he regrets voting for former Vice President Kamala Harris, explaining his reasoning during a Wednesday appearance on “The Sage Steele Show.”

Speaking with Sage Steele, Smith confirmed that he had previously cast his vote for Harris and acknowledged that he now views that decision differently.

Steele referenced his earlier comments, saying, “And that you regretted it,” to which Smith responded, “Yeah.”

Smith said he initially believed Harris would be able to work across party lines. “I also believed that she was the kind of person that… could work across the aisle,” Smith said.

He added that his perspective changed after observing the Democratic Party following the 2024 election.

“And then when I saw how things were unfolding and how out in the clouds the Democratic Party was even after they lost the election, I just said, ‘There’s no hope.’”

He continued, “I said, ‘I don’t know what the hell I was thinking about believing that you all would get it, because you still don’t get it.’”

Throughout the discussion, Smith framed his political views around a preference for divided government.

He told Steele that he is “completely and adamantly against one-party rule” and supports a system where power is split between political parties, with one party controlling the White House and the other holding at least one chamber of Congress.

Smith said he believed Harris could be influenced by Congress in a way that would produce consensus-driven decisions. “I knew that they would be able to compel her to do that,” he said.

“Which would make the American people feel comfortable about whatever decision was being made because we’re understanding that things are being run from a consensus perspective.”

He contrasted that view with his assessment of Donald Trump. “Trump was the latter,” Smith said. “Trump was different in that regard. I wasn’t comfortable with that because it’s him.”

Smith added that his vote could have changed if Republicans had nominated a different candidate.

“If it was Marco Rubio in there, I’d have voted for Marco Rubio in a heartbeat,” he said. “I would have voted for Nikki Haley in a heartbeat without question.”

During the interview, Steele questioned why Smith had been critical of Democrats after the election while still voting for Harris. Smith responded by pointing to his earlier public statements about former President Joe Biden.

“Who was the person that went on the air a year and a half ago and said we need a new president. Biden’s got to go. That was me,” Smith said.

Steele also referenced Smith’s earlier remarks on Dave Rubin’s show regarding his vote for Harris, asking, “You went on his show, and you said that you voted for Kamala Harris?”

During the conversation, Steele suggested there may have been additional factors influencing Smith’s decision. She said there was still “a pull” for him to represent “the Black community” and his family.

Smith responded, “That’s fair,” adding, “People need to be able to admit that that pull that exists. It’s human.”

Fox News Digital reached out to Harris for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
