Elon Musk has officially concluded his role with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the Trump administration’s temporary federal initiative aimed at rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse in the federal bureaucracy.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO announced the end of his tenure in a post Wednesday night on X.

“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk wrote.

“The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”

President Donald Trump established DOGE through an executive order signed on January 20, coinciding with the start of his second term.

Since its creation, DOGE has operated across federal agencies, working to cut government excess, cancel inefficient contracts, and identify corruption.

A senior White House official told Fox News Digital that DOGE will continue to function as planned, despite Musk’s departure.

“It is part of the DNA of this federal government,” the official stated, noting that DOGE currently operates within nearly every federal department.

According to the official, DOGE employees will continue reporting to their respective department heads and execute the president’s agenda to reduce inefficiency and enforce accountability throughout the federal system.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller praised DOGE’s impact, saying in a statement on X: “The work DOGE has done to eliminate government waste and corruption — the rot embedded deep within Washington — is among the most valuable services ever rendered to government. And the work has only just begun.”

Although Musk was a prominent public representative of the initiative, a March court filing clarified that he was not a formal employee of the United States DOGE Service and did not report to acting DOGE Administrator Amy Gleason.

Gleason, who previously served with the United States Digital Service, has been described as a “world-class talent” by colleagues.

The USDS was founded in 2014 under former President Barack Obama as a technology-focused agency within the Executive Office of the President.

DOGE is structured as a temporary, cross-agency body and is scheduled for dissolution on July 4, 2026, as directed by the executive order.

Until then, the organization will continue working to streamline government operations and implement cost-saving reforms.

According to the agency’s most recent update on May 26, DOGE initiatives under Musk’s public leadership contributed to an estimated $175 billion in taxpayer savings.

These savings came through asset sales, termination of government contracts, identification and elimination of fraudulent payments, and other cost-reduction strategies.

The calculated benefit translates to approximately $1,086.96 per taxpayer.

Despite the fiscal success of DOGE, Musk and his companies have faced public criticism and opposition from progressive activists during his time in the role.

Several protests targeted Musk and Tesla, with some efforts reportedly aimed at harming the electric vehicle company’s stock value.

DOGE’s work is expected to continue through the efforts of embedded staffers and agency heads, with the administration signaling that further actions to cut waste and increase transparency are underway.
