White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller defended the recently passed Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act during an appearance on Fox News’ Hannity Friday night, calling Democrat objections to the bill one of the “dumbest talking points” he’s ever heard.

The House of Representatives passed the SAVE Act on Thursday, with Republican support and only four Democrats crossing party lines to vote in favor of the measure.

The bill mandates that states require documented proof of U.S. citizenship before allowing individuals to register to vote in federal elections.

Fox host Sean Hannity questioned Miller on why there would be any opposition to the bill.

Hannity cited criticism from Democrats who claimed that the legislation could prevent married women from voting if their current surnames do not match those on their birth certificates.

“The only reason, Sean, you would be against any of that is if you wanted illegal aliens to vote and to vote in incredibly large numbers,” Miller responded. “So let’s just deal with all of this BS right now.”

Miller rejected the notion that the bill would disenfranchise women, describing it as a misrepresentation of the law’s actual provisions.

“The notion that Democrats are pushing that married women, who, by the way, are a Republican voting demographic, cannot get ID could be one of the dumbest talking points I have heard in my entire life,” he said.

The SAVE Act includes language that addresses issues related to name changes, allowing individuals to use government-issued identification that complies with the federal REAL ID Act of 2005.

Miller explained that this form of identification is obtainable at state departments of motor vehicles and confirms both identity and citizenship status.

“As you said, the Real ID Act creates an ID that you can get at the DMV that demonstrates you’re a citizen,” Miller said.

Miller further argued that the opposition stems from a broader goal by Democrats to allow non-citizens to vote in U.S. elections.

He pointed to reports that the Biden administration had issued Social Security numbers to millions of individuals who are in the country illegally.

“Democrats want illegal aliens to vote,” Miller said.

“It’s why Joe Biden and his administration gave millions, we verify this now, millions with an M, of illegal aliens’ Social Security numbers.”

“Once you have a Social Security number, it is incredibly easy to vote, to collect welfare, to get free government benefits, to participate in every aspect of American life,” he added. “This isn’t a mystery. They want illegals to steal elections, Sean.”

Democrats have continued to argue that the SAVE Act would lead to voter suppression and could create additional hurdles for certain eligible voters.

However, public polling shows strong national support for voter verification measures. An October 2024 Gallup poll found that 84% of Americans support requiring photo ID to vote, and 83% back requiring proof of citizenship to register.

Despite pushback from Democratic leaders, Republicans say the bill is necessary to ensure election integrity and restore public confidence in the voting process.

With the House passage complete, attention now turns to the Senate, where the bill faces a more uncertain path.
