Democratic strategist James Carville expressed frustration over the inability of his party to effectively counter President Donald Trump’s aggressive second-term agenda.
Speaking on his Politics War Room podcast Thursday, Carville acknowledged that Democrats have yet to develop a coherent strategy to push back against the administration’s sweeping policy moves and media dominance.
Carville referenced a 2018 remark by former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, who stated that “the way to deal with [the media] is to flood the zone with shit.” Carville conceded that Bannon’s observation was accurate, noting that Democrats are struggling to keep up with the sheer volume of actions coming from the White House.

“Bannon is right. We are flooded in shit and we are searching for a way to deal with this. These are extraordinarily difficult times,” Carville said.
“And he just keeps … moving with one stupid thing after another.”

He specifically criticized Trump’s reported discussions about expanding U.S. influence over international territories, including the Gaza Strip, the Panama Canal, and Greenland.
“The point is we have these conversations, we talk to people on the phone, we go to cocktail parties and dinners … When you sit back and see, when you take it one by one, it’s so much crazier than you can imagine that we’re having this discussion,” Carville added.
Carville also admitted that Democrats are struggling to find a unified response to Trump’s approach.
“And I don’t know how you accentuate. Do you oppose one thing? Do you oppose all five? Is it a personnel issue?” he asked.
“Is it a policy issue? … I’m struggling here a little bit, so maybe some of our really smart viewers can help us untangle it a little bit. It’s really tangled now because no one knows where to land. It’s all too incomprehensible.”
Carville’s concerns reflect broader divisions within the Democratic Party about how to respond to Trump’s second-term agenda.
According to Axios, Democratic lawmakers are facing mounting pressure from their base to take stronger action against Trump and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has aggressively cut government spending and reduced bureaucratic waste.
However, with Republicans holding the majority in both chambers of Congress, Democratic lawmakers argue that their ability to resist the administration’s policies is limited.
Some within the party advocate for total opposition to Trump’s agenda, while others appear open to negotiating on certain policies.
Carville also pointed to Trump’s ability to withstand controversies that would typically derail other politicians, highlighting past events such as the 2022 dinner with rapper Ye and controversial figure Nick Fuentes.
“He just keeps chugging along despite things that we thought would kill a political career,” Carville said.
MSNBC contributor Sam Stein echoed a similar sentiment in December, noting Trump’s ability to turn challenges—such as his ongoing legal battles—into political advantages.
“I think the real lesson from all this is that, you know, say what you will about Donald Trump, but he has one attribute that distinguishes him from anyone else in politics, which is an insatiable perseverance,” Stein said.
“He will just grind through stuff that, more often than not, other politicians will succumb to. And he can figure it out, he will just claw his way back in and he will fight it. And then he’ll turn it into his advantage. And he did martyr himself by the trials.”
As Trump’s policies continue to reshape Washington, Democrats remain in search of a strategy to counteract his agenda, but for now, Carville’s remarks suggest they have yet to find a clear path forward.
