The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Friday in favor of President Donald Trump, granting his administration the authority to end a Biden-era immigration program that provided temporary legal status to hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals.

The 7-2 decision clears the way for the Trump administration to begin revoking Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for individuals from four countries.

The program, originally expanded under Joe Biden, granted parole protections to approximately 500,000 individuals from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.

The Supreme Court’s ruling temporarily blocks a lower court decision that had prevented the Trump administration from moving forward with its plans to terminate the program.

Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson were the only dissenting voices in the majority ruling.

Under the TPS program, individuals from countries deemed unsafe due to armed conflict, environmental disaster, or other extraordinary conditions are permitted to live and work legally in the United States.

However, the Trump administration has argued that the conditions in several of these countries have improved, and therefore the temporary protections no longer apply.

The case reached the Supreme Court after U.S. Solicitor General John Sauer requested that the justices allow the administration to proceed with its rollback of the program.

Sauer argued that U.S. District Judge Edward Chen had overstepped his authority by blocking the administration’s actions and interfering in the executive branch’s control over immigration policy.

The ruling gives the Trump administration the green light to begin winding down TPS status for impacted groups, while litigation over the issue continues in lower courts.

In her dissenting opinion, Justice Jackson expressed concern over the immediate effects of the decision.

“The effect of the court’s order,” she wrote, “is to have the lives of half a million migrants unravel all around us before the courts decide their legal claims.”

Supporters of the Supreme Court’s decision point to longstanding precedent affirming the president’s broad authority over immigration enforcement and policy.

The administration has maintained that the TPS program was never intended to serve as a long-term immigration solution and must be reevaluated as conditions change in the countries originally designated for protection.

The ruling represents a significant legal victory for the Trump administration, which has made executive control over immigration enforcement a central focus of its policy agenda.

The administration has signaled that it intends to continue evaluating and revising existing immigration programs that were implemented under the Biden-Harris administration.

A final decision on the broader legal challenge to the revocation of TPS protections remains pending in the lower courts.

However, the Supreme Court’s decision allows the Trump administration to proceed with enforcement efforts while those cases are litigated.
