Newly released security footage, 911 calls, and body-worn camera video detail a violent encounter at a Henderson construction site that ended with a suspect attempting to run over police officers using a stolen front loader, authorities said.

The incident occurred shortly before 9:10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, at a construction site in the 600 block of North Water Street.

Officers with the Henderson Police Department responded after receiving reports that a front loader had been stolen from the site.

Before officers arrived, a remote security employee contacted 911 and reported seeing a man jump a fence into the secured construction area and attempt to start heavy equipment.

The suspect was later identified as 33-year-old Juan Rincon Carreno.

“We had somebody hop the fence, and it looks like he’s hot-wiring one of the bulldozers right now,” the caller told dispatch.

The caller added that an on-site security guard attempted to confront Carreno. During that confrontation, Carreno allegedly threatened the guard while holding a screwdriver.

“I have a guy trying to steal a bulldozer; He just threatened to kill me,” the security guard told dispatch.

“I tried getting him off the property, but he was threatening to kill me. He has a weapon on him as well.”

According to police documents, the security guard later told officers it was her first day working at that location.

She said she approached Carreno and asked if he worked at the site.

When he did not respond, she told him to leave.

She said Carreno began yelling aggressively and threatened to kill her if she did not back away.

The guard told police Carreno was holding a screwdriver with an estimated six- to seven-inch blade or shank length.

Carreno then gained control of a 2007 Kawasaki front loader, drove it through a fence, and proceeded toward Taylor Street, according to police spokesman Murnane.

Officer Megan Jacobs was the first officer to arrive on scene. Body-worn camera footage shows Jacobs exiting her patrol vehicle and issuing verbal commands for Carreno to stop.

Police said Carreno ignored those commands and drove the front loader directly toward Jacobs and her vehicle.

“He’s coming right at my patrol vehicle,” Jacobs can be heard saying on body camera footage.

Police said the front loader weighed approximately 39,000 pounds.

Jacobs attempted to create distance, but Carreno continued advancing toward her in what police said was an attempt to run her over.

The security guard remained on the phone with 911 and continued providing real-time updates to dispatch as the incident unfolded.

“I see one of the cops just pulled up right now, and yep, he got there. Looks like he’s about to run over the police car,” the guard said.

“Oh my God, my morning. He’s trying to run over the police officer right now. This guy is not playing.”

Jacobs discharged her firearm five times in an attempt to stop Carreno. Police said Carreno continued maneuvering the front loader toward officers. Sergeant Lance Jaworski arrived shortly afterward.

When Jaworski exited his patrol vehicle, Carreno turned the front loader toward him and rammed both patrol vehicles with the heavy equipment.

Police said Jaworski fired four rounds during the encounter.

The front loader became lodged on top of the patrol vehicles, causing it to stop.

Additional officers arrived at the scene as the standoff continued.

“He just destroyed the police car,” the security guard told dispatch.

Officers repeatedly ordered Carreno to exit the vehicle in both English and Spanish in an effort to de-escalate the situation.

Police said Carreno refused to comply.

Officers climbed onto the front loader and attempted to remove Carreno, but he resisted, leading to a physical struggle.

During the struggle, Carreno and two officers fell approximately seven feet from the front loader to the ground.

The two officers were transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Carreno was shot in the arm and leg and was also taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Carreno now faces multiple charges, including two counts of attempted murder, resisting a public officer with a deadly weapon not involving a firearm, grand larceny of a motor vehicle, destroying property of another valued between $250 and $5,000, and destroying or injuring real or personal property of another.

“I want to emphasize that our officers acted heroically and decisively to prevent a much greater threat to the public,” Murnane said.

“The suspect was actively using heavy machinery in a reckless and deliberate manner, creating an immediate and escalating threat to the community. I am proud of how our officers responded and performed.”

Murnane added that Carreno was carrying a shoebox containing incoherent writings that included suicidal ideologies.
