An early morning shooting at an apartment complex near Montgomery Blvd. and Carlisle Blvd. in northeast Albuquerque on Friday left a suspect dead and an Albuquerque Police Department (APD) officer injured. A resident of the apartment complex was also hurt during the incident, though it remains unclear if their injuries were caused by gunfire or flying debris.
APD Chief Harold Medina reported that the incident escalated rapidly when the suspect opened fire on responding officers. During the exchange, an officer was shot in the leg and transported to a hospital, where they are expected to recover. The injured resident was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, was killed during the exchange of gunfire. Chief Medina revealed that officers had interacted with the same individual the previous day during a mental health crisis. At that time, officers offered to transport the suspect to a hospital and provide assistance, but the individual declined any help.
