A man remains in stable condition after being shot by Baltimore police officers who said he charged at them with his vehicle during a narcotics-related incident Tuesday night, according to city officials.
The shooting occurred around 8:15 p.m. in the 1200 block of Division Street. Baltimore Police Department officials said officers initially responded to the area for a narcotics call when the encounter unfolded.
Kevin Jones, deputy commissioner of operations for the Baltimore Police Department, said officers attempted to stop a vehicle near the intersection of 21st and Charles streets.
According to Jones, the driver refused to stop and fled, prompting officers to follow the vehicle through multiple city streets.
The pursuit continued until the vehicle entered a dead-end alley on Division Street, Jones said.
At that point, officers believed the situation had reached a critical point.
According to Jones, once inside the alley, the driver reversed the vehicle and then accelerated forward, charging directly at the officers who were positioned nearby.

Jones said the vehicle was used in a manner that posed an immediate threat to the officers’ safety.
Multiple officers discharged their firearms, firing into the vehicle, Jones said.
The driver, a 37-year-old man, was struck by police gunfire.
He was transported to a hospital, where police said he is currently listed in stable condition.
Jones said officers immediately rendered aid to the wounded driver following the shooting.
Medical assistance was provided at the scene before the man was transported for further treatment.
A passenger who was also inside the vehicle during the incident was not shot, according to police.
Jones said that individual was taken into custody. Authorities did not immediately release the passenger’s name or specify whether charges have been filed.
Mayor Brandon Scott addressed the incident during a news conference
Tuesday night, emphasizing that the shooting followed what he described as a dangerous confrontation initiated by the driver.
“This unfortunate event is the result of someone trying to run over police officers after police officers were doing their job,” Scott said.
“We know that this is under investigation. We will abide by all rules and regulations that we have, and that includes operating, as we always do, with MONSE.”
Scott’s comments referenced the department’s standard protocols for reviewing officer-involved shootings. The investigation will include oversight mechanisms required under Baltimore’s policing agreements and internal review processes.
The Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police also acknowledged the incident in a post on X.
The union said it was aware of the shooting and noted that, based on initial information, no officers appeared to have been injured during the encounter.
Police officials did not release the name of the driver who was shot or provide additional details about the narcotics call that led officers to the area.
Authorities also did not say how many officers fired their weapons or how many rounds were discharged.
The shooting will be investigated by the Baltimore Police Department’s internal review units, consistent with department policy in officer-involved shootings.
As with similar cases, investigators are expected to review body-worn camera footage, witness statements, physical evidence, and radio communications to determine whether officers’ actions were in compliance with department procedures and state law.
The scene on Division Street was secured for several hours Tuesday night as investigators processed evidence and documented the location where the shooting occurred.
