Suspicious Pizza Deliveries Prompt Lawmaker Security Concerns Across the Country

Federal and Capitol law enforcement officials are investigating a string of unsolicited pizza deliveries made to the homes of members of Congress and U.S. Capitol Police leadership, as reported by The New York Post.

The anonymous deliveries, made to both Democrats and Republicans, are being treated as a potential security threat.

“These recent pizza deliveries are troubling and yet again, bring to light the heightened threat landscape we are living in,” the U.S. Capitol Police told ABC News. “Violence and threats, of any kind, targeted at elected officials will not be tolerated.”

Capitol Police said it is working with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to determine the origin and intent behind the deliveries.

The surge in incidents follows the June 15 killings of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Eric Sloneker, in their home in Brooklyn Park. The suspected gunman, 57-year-old Vance Boelter, was apprehended Sunday night outside Minneapolis.

Authorities believe Boelter compiled a manifesto listing up to 70 potential targets, many of them elected officials and individuals affiliated with abortion advocacy. The list reportedly included Minnesota Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, and Reps. Ilhan Omar and Kelly Morrison.

According to law enforcement, some of the anonymous pizza deliveries were made before the Minnesota shootings occurred. Others came afterward, leading to speculation that the deliveries may be intended to intimidate lawmakers or signal knowledge of their home addresses.

A congressional source told ABC News, “People are really scared,” after the pizza deliveries were discussed during a call with the House Sergeant at Arms on Tuesday.

The practice of anonymous pizza deliveries has been noted in past security briefings.

Authorities say that while it may appear harmless, such deliveries can serve as a warning to public officials that their personal residences have been located, especially when the recipient never placed an order.

Although no physical harm has been reported in connection with the recent deliveries, law enforcement agencies are treating the incidents seriously given the current security environment and recent acts of political violence.

Capitol Police and partnering agencies have not disclosed how many lawmakers have received the pizzas or whether the deliveries came from the same sender. The investigation remains ongoing.
