Actress Sydney Sweeney addressed criticism this week over the marketing campaigns she has been involved in, defending her choices and describing her approach as strategic and deliberate.

The 27-year-old Euphoria star has become one of the most prominent faces in Hollywood in recent years.

Alongside leading roles in film and television, she has appeared in advertising campaigns for brands including Baskin Robbins, Laneige, and Samsung.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Sweeney said she closely monitors public reaction to her endorsements and sees it as part of her work.

“I think it’s important to have a finger on the pulse of what people are saying, because everything is a conversation with the audience,” she said.

One campaign that drew considerable attention was her partnership with Dr. Squatch, which produced a limited-edition soap line reportedly infused with her bathwater.

The campaign sparked widespread reaction online.

“It was mainly the girls making comments about it, which I thought was really interesting,” Sweeney said.

“They all loved the idea of Jacob Elordi’s bathwater.”

Asked whether she approaches such work with a strategy, she replied, “Yes. Very.”

Sweeney declined to discuss her recent American Eagle denim campaign, which drew criticism over its tagline “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”

Some commentators claimed the campaign contained racial undertones and drew comparisons to propaganda, but Sweeney has not publicly addressed the controversy.

During the interview, Sweeney also reflected on her hands-on involvement in her projects.

“I definitely have a hard time sitting on set in a chair,” she said.

“I just want to ask, What’s the budget? What’s our line item? Where can we make things run better?”

The actress avoided questions regarding her former fiancé Jonathan Davino, with whom she co-founded Fifty-Fifty Films.

The pair ended their engagement earlier this year. “I’m going to keep all of my personal stuff out of it,” she told the magazine.

Sweeney also revisited comments she made in 2022 about not being able to take extended time off work.

At the time, she said that if she took six months away, she would not be able to cover her expenses.

Clarifying those remarks, she explained, “What I was talking about is more that I didn’t have time to take six months off. I was so busy, and still, same. But I do that because I don’t want to take six months off. I get anxiety thinking about just taking a few days off.”

She added that her schedule remains open to new opportunities despite her packed calendar.

“But if I wanted to lock everything in, I could probably be booked for the next three or four years.”

Despite the pace of her workload, Sweeney said she is most comfortable while working.

“Being on set is my happy place,” she said.

Director Paul Feig, who directed her in The Housemaid, confirmed her dedication.

“She loves to work. She was completely present emotionally, just up for anything, and really didn’t bring any issues to set,” Feig said.

He added that while Sweeney was going through personal challenges during production, she remained focused.

“I’d say, ‘Hey, are you OK?’ and she’d go, ‘I’m fine, I’m great!’ but not defensively.”

Sweeney’s career trajectory has accelerated sharply in recent years. According to The Wall Street Journal, she was paid $65,000 for the 2023 film Reality.

One year later, she earned $2 million for the romantic comedy Anyone But You, which co-starred Glen Powell.

By the time she signed on to The Housemaid, set for release on December 25, her reported asking price had reached $7.5 million.

The actress continues to balance acting, producing, and endorsements, positioning herself as one of Hollywood’s most in-demand figures.
