The concerts, scheduled for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at the Ernst Happel Stadium, have been canceled.
Authorities revealed that the suspects, radicalized online, had detailed plans for their attacks. One of the arrested men, a 19-year-old who had pledged allegiance to ISIS, was found to have chemical substances in his possession.
The nature of these substances and whether they could have been used to construct a bomb is still under investigation.
Vienna State Police Director Franz Ruf and Police Chief Gerhard Purstl confirmed that Austria’s Cobra unit, which is similar to the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team, played a role in the operation.
During the investigation, authorities discovered Islamic State group and al Qaeda material at the residence of the second suspect.
Following the cancellation of the Wednesday shows, Vienna’s Interior Minister Gerhard Karner confirmed on Thursday that no additional suspects are currently being sought.
