Following Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s tense meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House on Friday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and co-host Ben Ferguson released an emergency episode of their podcast, The Verdict, warning that the meeting was so damaging that Zelensky “does not politically survive this.”
Zelensky’s visit was initially scheduled to finalize a rare minerals agreement between the United States and Ukraine, as well as to discuss the terms of a peace deal.
However, the meeting quickly turned confrontational, with Trump making it clear that Zelensky would only be welcomed back when he was serious about negotiations.
President Zelenskyy had an epic meltdown in the Oval Office—he crashed and burned.
This will go down as one of the most disastrous Oval Office meetings in our nation’s history.

The senator said Zelensky “showed up in the Oval Office and decided he was there to battle Donald Trump, decided he was there to insult Donald Trump, decided he was there to attack and belittle Donald Trump.”
Ferguson, agreeing with Cruz’s assessment, emphasized that “the pretense for this meeting was to get a deal and to work a deal for peace.”
Cruz argued that Zelensky “had one job”—to secure U.S. support for a peace agreement that would leave Ukraine in a strong position—but instead, he approached the meeting with arrogance.
“He apparently decided that he knew better than everyone else, and that President Trump should be kissing his ass,” Cruz said.
During the meeting, Trump made it clear that U.S. support was not unconditional and that Zelensky needed to be more appreciative of the aid Ukraine had already received—totaling hundreds of billions of dollars.
Zelensky’s attitude was dismissive, Cruz said, describing it as “why the hell haven’t you given us more?”
Vice President JD Vance also confronted Zelensky, pressing him on Ukraine’s handling of the war effort and the country’s reliance on U.S. funding.
Adding to the tension, Cruz and Ferguson pointed out that Zelensky did not even dress formally for the meeting.
“You’re wearing a sweatshirt, for Pete’s sake! It’s the Oval Office of the White House, the office of the President of the United States—put on a friggin’ jacket and tie,” Cruz said, drawing applause from the audience.
He also criticized Zelensky’s tendency to use theatrics to gain sympathy, calling him “a performance artist” and pointing out that he wore “the same damn sweatshirt” when he previously addressed a joint session of Congress.
Cruz compared the fallout from this meeting to the disastrous presidential debate between Joe Biden and Trump on June 27, predicting that “this meeting could easily end President Zelensky’s tenure.”
Ferguson agreed, noting that the meeting had “changed the way the rest of the world is looking at him.”
Cruz acknowledged that Zelensky had “moments” of leadership early in the war but said his global standing had since deteriorated.
Ukraine has not held elections for years, and there is growing speculation about Zelensky’s grip on power. Cruz referenced a recent Newsweek article that suggested Zelensky’s political future is uncertain.
Meanwhile, Democrats in Congress have continued to back Zelensky, standing with him over Trump and Vance after the White House meeting.
Cruz and Ferguson also pointed to an earlier incident when Zelensky appeared alongside then-Vice President Kamala Harris in Pennsylvania for what Cruz called “essentially a campaign event,” where Zelensky criticized Vance—who was at the time a U.S. senator and Trump’s running mate.
“We said if Trump wins, Zelensky is going to deeply regret having made those remarks,” Cruz said, calling it “amazing” that Zelensky “keeps doubling down.”
Cruz then reinforced his prediction: “I think there’s a very good possibility that Zelensky does not politically survive this, and within days he’s out of office.”
Cruz also pointed out that Trump campaigned on ending the war in Ukraine, and voters understood the contrast in choices.
“Every voter who went and voted in November understood that if you elect the Democrats, the Ukraine war goes on and on and on, and we keep pouring billions into it forever. And every voter understood, if you vote for Donald Trump, this war is going to come to an end,” Cruz said, receiving applause from the audience.
He stressed that “it is important that this war come to an end in a way that is a clear and unmistakable loss for Russia, a loss for Putin.”
Cruz concluded by saying Zelensky’s “performance was so bad that I think it not only harmed his own country, but I think it harmed world peace.”
As tensions between the U.S. and Ukraine continue to unfold, Cruz predicted that Zelensky’s leadership is now at risk—a consequence of what the senator called one of the most disastrous diplomatic meetings in history.
