During a Senate confirmation hearing for Attorney General nominee Pam Bondi, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) criticized the Biden-Harris administration for what he called a pattern of politically motivated prosecutions against former President Donald Trump.

Cruz outlined a series of events that he believes were aimed at undermining Trump and, by extension, the millions of Americans who supported him.

“Until the Biden-Harris White House came along, and in the last four years, we’ve seen Donald Trump indicted and prosecuted not once, not twice, not three times, but four separate times,” Cruz stated.

Bondi, responding to Cruz’s remarks, added, “And two assassination attempts.”

Pam Bondi delivers opening remarks during a Senate Judiciary committee hearing on her nomination to be Attorney General of the United States on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025 in Washington, D.C.

Cruz then compared the relentless efforts to target Trump to the obsessive pursuit of Jean Valjean by Inspector Javert in Les Misérables.

“And I have to say, Javert from Les Mis would be chagrined at the efforts of Democrats to do anything possible to take him down,” Cruz said.

Cruz suggested that Trump was not the primary target of these prosecutions, but rather the American people who supported him.

“I believe the real target in this was not President Trump, but it was the American people—that these prosecutions were brought because partisan prosecutors were terrified that the American people would do exactly what they did in November of 2024 and vote to reelect Donald J. Trump,” Cruz argued.

Bondi affirmed Cruz’s statement, highlighting Trump’s significant support in the 2024 election. “By 77.3 million Americans. Seventy-seven point three million Americans,” Bondi said.

The exchange concluded with Cruz seeking a commitment from Bondi to uphold impartial justice if confirmed as Attorney General.

“Will you commit every day as Attorney General to follow the law, to follow the Constitution, to uphold the rule of law without favor and without regard to the partisan position of any criminal defendant?” Cruz asked.

Bondi responded unequivocally, “Yes, Senator.”

Cruz affirmed her pledge, stating, “That’s what we should all expect.”

The interaction underscored the ongoing debate about the role of political bias in the justice system and highlighted Bondi’s commitment to ensuring that justice is administered without favoritism.
