Law enforcement officials in the Portland area have confirmed that ten bodies have been recovered from local rivers since mid-April, with the most recent discovered on Saturday in the Willamette River near Cathedral Park, according to KPTV.

Authorities have not yet released the identity or cause of death for the individual found over the weekend.

The growing number of bodies found in the Willamette and Columbia rivers has drawn public attention in recent weeks.

Two of the ten recoveries occurred in May alone.

However, officials from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) have stated that the overall number is not considered abnormal for this time of year, though the circumstances remain tragic.

In a press release issued earlier this month following the discovery of the eighth body, MCSO addressed concerns over the apparent increase in river-related fatalities.

“The number of bodies recovered in a short time frame is not unusual, though it is tragic,” the release stated.

Officials clarified that many of the deaths have been attributed to drowning, with suicide being a primary cause in several of the cases.

The sheriff’s office emphasized that, at this time, there is no evidence to suggest foul play or any connection between the incidents.

“The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office has no reason to believe there is any suspicious activity nor do we believe there is any connection between the bodies,” the statement read.

Investigators cited several seasonal and environmental factors that could be contributing to the number of recoveries.

Rising water temperatures and currents during the spring months, combined with increased activity on and around the water, are believed to play a significant role.

The decomposition of bodies that entered the water during colder months may also lead to more visible discoveries as temperatures rise.

Between April and May 2024, six bodies were recovered from the rivers.

Records show that bodies were found on April 13, April 15, April 18, April 24, April 30, and on May 3 and 4.

On May 3 alone, three separate bodies were pulled from the Willamette and Columbia rivers, according to KATU.

Local residents who are familiar with the risks of the area’s waterways have urged caution.

One boater shared his experience, recalling the loss of a friend in the Columbia River and emphasizing the need for preparation and safety when near the water.

“It can happen to anybody, and you shouldn’t think that you know everything that’s for sure,” he said.

“I make sure that I have my safety equipment, my fire extinguishers, my paddles, I let people know where I’m going and when I get there, I let people know that I’ve made it safe.”

He added, “Absolutely prepare for the worst and hope for the best because I’ve been out in the ocean and I’ve been out on these waters and everything can change within a couple of seconds, and if you’re not prepared for it, the worst can happen.”

Law enforcement officials continue to investigate each individual case but have reiterated that there is currently no indication of criminal activity.

The Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting autopsies and toxicology tests as part of the ongoing process to determine the exact causes of death.
