Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Nancy Larson announced on Monday that ten individuals have been charged in connection with a coordinated attack outside the Prairieland ICE Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas.

The ambush, which occurred late on the night of July 4, left a police officer with a gunshot wound to the neck and triggered a multi-agency investigation.

According to Larson, the incident began around 10:37 p.m. on Friday, July 4, when Alvarado Police Department officers responded to a report of a suspicious individual carrying a firearm outside the detention facility, located in Johnson County.

When officers arrived on scene, they encountered multiple individuals dressed in black military-style clothing. As they approached, they were met with gunfire from several assailants.

One officer was struck in the neck and airlifted to a hospital in Fort Worth.

He was later released.

Authorities believe the suspects disabled the facility’s security cameras and used fireworks and graffiti to draw ICE employees and responding officers outside.

Larson described the incident as an “organized attack” intended to ambush federal officers.

“We’re here to tell you that late at night on July 4th, Friday night at approximately 10:37 p.m. at the Prairieland ICE Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, 10 to 12 individuals dressed in black military-style clothing began shooting fireworks and engaging in acts of vandalism at the facility,” Larson said during a press conference.

“And this was part of an organized attack. Today, my office has charged 10 individuals with three counts of attempted murder of a federal officer. Each of the 10 are also charged with three counts of discharging a firearm in relation to a crime of violence. Each of these defendants faces a mandatory prison term of 10 years and up to life in prison,” she said.

An eleventh suspect has been charged with obstruction of justice and conspiracy after allegedly attempting to conceal and destroy evidence connected to the attack. That individual could face up to 10 years in federal prison if convicted.

Larson characterized the incident as a “planned ambush with the intent to kill ICE corrections officers,” stating, “Make no mistake, this was not a so-called peaceful protest. It was indeed an ambush.”

The suspects reportedly launched fireworks and painted graffiti on the property as part of an effort to draw ICE employees and officers outside.

“The graffiti had such words as traitor, ICE pig, and other profanity,” Larson said.

“Then there was a 911 call from the facility. Two unarmed corrections officers went outside to speak with the vandals. One of the gunmen signaled using a flashlight to the vandals.”

The main shooter, however, was not among the vandals.

Instead, he was reportedly positioned in a wooded area adjacent to the facility.

“Another assailant who was across the street, nowhere near the corrections officers, shot 20 to 30 rounds at these unarmed corrections officers,” Larson explained.

Following the shooting, law enforcement apprehended seven suspects.

Some were wearing body armor, and others were equipped with two-way radios.

Investigators recovered a number of items, including a flag that read “resist fascism, fight oligarchy” and fliers that stated “fight ICE terror with class war” and “free all political prisoners.”

Additional searches conducted over the weekend uncovered more evidence.

According to CBS News, agents recovered masks, goggles, tactical gloves, additional body armor, nine more weapons, fireworks, spray paint, and materials described as insurrectionist in nature.

Joe Rothrock, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Dallas field office, said, “This incident highlights the dangers that local law enforcement face on a daily basis, and the charges announced reflect the seriousness of the crimes.”

The federal indictments were announced hours after a separate shooting targeting Border Patrol agents occurred in McAllen, Texas, near the U.S.-Mexico border.

Three agents were injured in that ambush, including one who was shot in the knee.

The gunman was killed at the scene.

Officers recovered multiple weapons and a large cache of ammunition from the attacker’s vehicle, which had been spray-painted with a Latin phrase reportedly tied to a terrorist group featured in a popular video game franchise.
